Instruction: You’ll be given 5—10 minutes to learn to recite the passage on your own.

Is Failure a Bad Thing?

Failure is a common occurrence in our daily life. Whatever we do, there are always two possible results: success or failure. Although everyone wants to succeed in what he tries, sometimes failure can’t be avoided.

Different people hold different attitudes towards failure. When faced with it, some can stand up to it, draw a useful lesson from it and try their best to fulfill what they are determined

to do. Others, however, lose heart and give in. They do nothing but complain about themselves and objective conditions.

As a popular saying goes, “Failure teaches success.” In my opinion, what really counts is not the failure itself, but the proper attitude we should take after it. I trust that as long as we keep to what is right and correct what is wrong, that is to say, learn a lesson from failure, we will be certain to succeed. So I am of the opinion that failure is not a bad thing.

Part 3 Language output

Instruction: In this part, you’ll be required to finish some exercise related to using language in writing.

Task 1 Necessary sentence patterns in writing

1. Attributive clause Example

①Success, which almost everyone dreams of, doesn’t come out of luck but of diligence. ②The school where I used to study has been replaced by a factory now. ③Tom often behaves awkwardly, which embarrasses his brother a lot.

2. Partial inversion Example

①Only when you’re old enough will you understand this. ②Not until he left for a week did I realize how much I missed him. ③So indifferent were the crowd to the injured girl that he became furious.

3. The emphatic pattern Example

①It is love that makes the world go round.

②It wasn’t until he took off his hat that I recognized him.

4. Non-predicate verbs Example

①Being sick, he was suggested to stay at home. → He was suggested to stay at home because he was sick.

②The desk made of red wood is worth $20,000. → The desk which is made of red wood

is worth $20,000.

5. Noun clause Example

①There is no doubt that environmental protection cannot be emphasized too much. ②It is essential that we should form a good habit of being punctual. ③I firmly believe that where there is a will, there is a way.

④The problem is how we can sustain development while not destroying the environment.

6. Adverbial clause Example

①I arrived early so that I could have time for a cup of coffee. ②Even though it rains, he will come on time.

③Whenever I meet with difficulties, I choose to embrace them with a smile.

Exercise: Change the following sentences according to requirements. 1. I don’t think Bruce is qualified for the job. He is too soft. (用定语从句合并)

Instruction: There are two mistakes in every sentence. Find them and correct them. Example
