Books That Remind Me of Home

Being in another country makes you appreciate all the things you love about your home. Reading and sharing books helps me to connect with my home country, the UK.

Here are some books that, for me, create vivid memories of home. Daddy Long Legs by Jean Webster

This book takes the form of a series of letters, and follows the story of a girl, Judy, as

she goes to university and discovers a whole world of new experiences. It reminds me of my home and my mother, because she used to read it to me when I was ill in bed.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson-Burnett

Have you ever read a description of a rural (乡村的) area that made you feel like you were actually there? For me, this book does exactly that. It is about a young girl who discovers a secret garden.

The Railway Children by E. Nesbit

This was one of my favourite books when I was younger, and for this reason it still strongly reminds me of England and my childhood. It follows three children and their adventures living next to a railway.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

This is a science-fiction novel about a man’s adventures in space after the destruction of Earth. It is creative and has a very British sense of humour. When I read it, I feel a strong connection to my home.

B.It shows British humour. D.It is designed for parents.

22.Who offers a picture of a countryside?

One spring morning many years ago, I was on southeastern Alaska’s Kupreanof Island when I saw a huge wolf caught in a trap. From her appearance, I realized it was a mother wolf and that somewhere hungry pups (小崽) were waiting for her. I guessed she had been trapped only a few days. So her pups were probably still alive, hungry, surely no more than a few miles away. But I thought if I released the wolf, she would tear me to pieces.

So I decided to search for her pups instead. Following some footprints, I finally found four tiny pups. One by one, I placed them in a bag and headed back. When the mother wolf spotted me, she stood up, possibly picking up the smell of her young. I released the pups, and they raced to her.

What next? I wondered. The mother wolf was clearly suffering. Yet each time I moved in her direction, she let out a threatening sound.

I put up a shelter for myself and was soon asleep nearby. At dawn, I was awakened by the four pups sniffing at my face and hands. I glanced toward the anxious mother wolf. If I could only win her confidence, I thought. It was her only hope. Over the next few days, I fed her, talked gently with her and played with the pups. But the big animal never took her eyes off me. When I was beginning to lose hope, at dusk on the fifth day, I saw a wagging (摇摆) of her tail. I moved within the length of her chain. She remained still. My heart in my mouth, I slowly placed my hand on the wolf’s injured leg. “OK,” I said, “We’ll have you out of there.” I pressed and the trap sprang open, the wolf pulled free.

Slowly, she headed toward me. She smelled my hands and arms and then began licking (添) my fingers. I was astonished. This went against everything I’d ever heard about wolves. Yet, strangely, it all seemed so natural.

24.What did the writer do after he discovered the mother wolf? A.He looked for the pups C.He put the wolf in a bag

B.He set up a trap.

D.He frightened off the wolf.

25.Why did the writer stay with the wolves for 5 days? A.To study the habit of the wolves. C.To witness the growth of the pups.

B.To gain the trust of the mother wolf. D.To experience the charm of the wild

26.How did the writer feel when he was trying to remove the trap? A.Nervous. B.Proud. C.Relieved. D.Hopeless. 27.The text delivers the message that ______. A.creatures are born equal C.wagging wolves seldom bite

B.having comes before giving D.kindness deserves acceptance

Parents have worked hard to teach the most important life lessons to their babies. They remind kids to eat with a knife and fork, and not to make noises in public. But there’s one important lesson that parents might forget, and it can’t be covered in a simple conversation. In fact, they’d better teach kids by example.

According to a study, babies receive more than genes(基因)from their parents. They can also absorb good qualities, such as persistence, by watching how adults behave. Researchers at MIT said that babies who watched an adult struggling with and then succeeding in something were more likely to show persistence when given a new task.

The team at MIT studied 262 babies between the ages of 13 and 18 months. They were divided into three groups. In the first group, the lead researcher struggled with two different toys’ problems before solving them, letting the babies watch when she did so. In the second group,

the researcher solved the problems but did not struggle with them. And for the third group, she did not do anything.

After that, the researcher left the children playing with a small musical toy. She showed the babies that it could play music but did not teach them how to turn it on. The babies in the first group discovered and pressed the toy’s button many more times than those in the last two groups. In other words, the babies did not copy what they had watched; they learned not to give up, instead.

Now researchers are interested in exploring which ways influence babies most. They wonder if the results can work in the real world, and whether the lesson of persistence might last into adulthood. After all, persistence is one of the most important qualities of the successful people. 28.What does the underlined part “one important lesson” in Paragraph 1 refer to? A.Behaving politely in public. C.Using a knife and fork properly.

B.Setting an example to kids.

D.Teaching kids necessary life skills.

29.How did the team at MIT mainly carry out the study? A.By doing a research. C.By analyzing some facts.

30.What can be learned from the study?

A.Kids in the first group turned on the musical toy. B.Kids could copy the same behavior of the researcher. C.The first group kids tried more times to turn on the toy. D.Kids in the last two groups had the same performance. 31.Which of the following would the author agree with? A.Parents should spend more time with babies. B.Parents should pay attention to their behavior. C.Persistence is an important quality for parents. D.Babies should be taught social skills from birth.
