Passage B

One day Tony was crossing the road when he was hit by a car. He fell and broke his arm.

An ambulance soon arrived and took Tony to a hospital. There a doctor operated on his arm and put the arm in a cast(石膏). Tony could not move it at all. “You must keep your arm in a cast for six weeks,” the doctor said. “That will give the broken bone a chance to heal.”

Six weeks later, Tony went back to the hospital. The doctor used a large saw to cut the cast and took Tony’s arm out.

“Can you move your arm, Tony?” he asked.

Tony tried to move his arm. At first it was difficult, but soon he could move it easily. “Yes, it’s fine,” he said. “Thank you very much.”

“In a few days it will be as good as new,” the doctor said. “Just exercise it a little.” “Will I be able to play the guitar?” Tony asked.

“Of cause you will,” the doctor said. “You’ll have no problems.”

Different people think differently about time.

American people usually think it is important to know the time. In cities of the USA, clocks can be seen in stations, schools and other buildings. Radio announcers(播音员) tell you the correct time during the day. Most Americans also have watches with them wherever they go. They do certain things at certain things at certain time. They don’t like to be late.

But time is not so important to people in other countries. When you visit a country in South America, you will find that people don’t like to hurry. If you have an appointment with somebody, he is likely to be late, because he may not want to arrive on time.

In South America, even the radio programs may not begin on time. People on the radio do not think it is so important to give the exact time. They think that clocks or watches are just machines and if you do everything on time you just let a clock or a watch control your life.

The Gordon family was spending a day on the beach.

“That was quick work, young man,” Mr. Gordon said. He turned to his wife. “Give the lifeguard a dollar.”

“A dollar!” Sandra cried. “Dad, how can you give him a dollar! He save my life. I was half dead.”

“Quite right, girl,” Mr. Gordon said, pleased by his daughter’s awareness(意识到) of the value of money.

He turned to his wife again and said, “She’s right. She was only half dead. Give him fifty cents.”

Passage E
