Is it true that British people have a better sense of humor than people in other countries ? Let's have a look at what we laugh at in Britain.
To the British, powerful and important people are often sources of laughter, not just politicians who make us chuckle but anyone whose job is to tell people what to do and who takes themselves too seriously.
We laugh at authority but also, sympathetically (同情地), with anyone who is treated badly. We know they can't win, but if they do so sometimes, it's even funnier. Our clowns are often silly people doing silly things--Mr Bean, for example--while in America, they are often clever people doing clever things--and winning.
The fact that we laugh when other people might feel hopeless is one of the oddest things to appreciate about British humor. We do have a strong sense of irony(反讽). “Not very pleasant,” we might say after some terrible experience.
Together with this is our love of understatement(轻描淡写).“It's a bit windy today,” we might say in the middle of a typhoon, or “ there is a slight problem,” when something has gone very seriously wrong. This is related to the old-fashioned British expression “stiff upper lip”. Don't express extreme feelings, just “just keep calm and carry on.”
Another thing that can make it difficult to understand British humor is that we don't always laugh or even smile when say something funny. We often keep a straight face or use an unsmiling deadpan(面无表情) expression, even when we're making a joke.
Do you think the British sense of humor is unique? 70. Where does the writer probably come from ? A. America B. Britain C. China D. It isn't mentioned. 71. Of the following sayings, which one is not about British humor? A. Irony

There was once a professor of medicine, who was very strict with the students. Whenever he took the chair on the exam committee (委员会), the students would be in fear, for he was seldom pleased with the answers they gave. A student would be lucky enough if he or she could receive a good mark from him. At the end of the term, the students of medicine would take their exam again. Now a student entered the room and got seated before the committee. This student was a little nervous as he knew it would not be so easy to get through the exam at all.
The professor began to ask the student to describe a certain illness, his answer turned out to be OK.
Then the professor asked about the cure (治疗) for illness, and the student also answered just as right.
“Good,” said the professor, “and how much will you give the patient?” “A full spoon,” answered the student.
“Now you may go out and wait for what you can get,” said the professor. At the same time the committee discussed carefully the answers the student had given. Suddenly the student noticed that there was something wrong with his last answer. “A full spoon is too much,” he thought to himself. Anxiously, he opened the door of the room and cried, “Mr. Professor, I've made a mistake! A spoon is too much for the patient. He can take only five drops.”
“I'm sorry, sir,” said the professor coldly, “but it's too late. Your patient has died.” 74.The student who finished his answers was asked to go out ____ .
