Charging fees to run errands (跑腿) has slowly become a popular business model in China’s internet-based world. Now it seems to have caught on at Chinese university campuses after the shopping madness that was “Singles Day” on Nov. 11.

Millions of students now juggle (应对) their busy academic schedules with the additional chores of picking up deliveries of their online shopping. So other students have identified an opportunity to make some money and are now charging fees for doing things, like collecting deliveries or picking up bottles of hot water, for other students. The China News Agency has reported that students running errands for others can make as much as 3,000 yuan per month.

Some have “expanded” their business scope to include answering roll calls to cover for students who skip classes.

While many have applauded the resourcefulness of students trying to subsidize their tuition with hard work, others worry that the “business” could distract students from their studies, and lead to illegitimate work such as sitting in examinations for others.

1. 用约30个单词概述上述信息的主要内容;

2. 用约120个单词阐述你对大学生兼职(running errands)的看法,并用2~3个理由或论据支撑你的看法。 Many university students (73.13%) are involved in running errands, thinking it all right for their life and studies while the majority (nearly 80%) admit their academic work is affected more or less. Opinions are divided.

(Approval) I subscribe to the idea of running errands for money for the following reasons: for one thing, despite the scholarship and financial assistance programs offered at universities, to those facing financial pressures, running errands may help them with their studies to some extent. For another thing, students are expected to further understand the service industry and sharpen their working skills, better preparing themselves for their future career in the long term.

The above reasons taken into consideration, we may safely conclude that not only does running errands bring us economic benefits, but it contributes to cultivating our interpersonal and social skills. Therefore, I am in complete agreement with this practice. (Disapproval)

On a personal note, I’m against running errands, which does more harm than good with reasons as follows: above all, this act takes time and energy, surely influencing students’ daily routines and their studies. After all, as students, priority should be given to their studies. Worse still, by doing so, students are more likely to take to illegal activities like taking exams for others, landing them in big trouble and even ruining their academic careers. Altogether, I will focus more attention on my academic work. Anyhow, it is what ability and skills I have developed in school that counts a lot in my future career. Undoubtedly, I will spend more spare time on my studies instead of making money.

When surfing the Internet, I came across a list of ordinary people who moved China, I was especially touched by an old lady from Zhoukou, Henan Province. The old lady and her husband are homeless, wandering in Shenzhen. Every evening, she sits near Shenzhen University, selling her paintings. When hungry, she just eats some dry food. Usually she can only finish two paintings a night, for either of which she charges 10 yuan. Tough as life is , the old lady has her pride and refuses to beg money from others. The old lady’s optimistic attitude towards life has left a deep impression on me. In addition, She would rather make a living by working hard than be a beggar. Her story puts me to shame, for I always complain about everything and has a habit of depending on others. I have learned the spirit of independence from the old lady. Besides, when faced with difficulties, I will choose never to give up and make the greatest efforts.

At least 36 people died in a fatal stampede (踩踏事件) during New Year celebrations in Shanghai on January 1st, 2015. The tragedy happened at a crowded square in Shanghai’s gleaming Bund area at around 11:35 p.m.

Most of the injured were young people in their twenties, a majority of them women. There were also college students and children. They were sent to several hospitals for treatment, including Changzheng Hospital, the Shanghai No.1 People’s Hospital, Ruijin Hospital and Huangpu District Central Hospital.

Lack of awareness over safety risk behind public gatherings and loose control at the scene contributed to the tragedy. The disorder at the scene also exposed the deficiency in emergency exercise and safety education. A profound lesson should be learned from the incident. For those areas with high safety risks, the authorities should have special emergency response plans and make sufficient analysis and assessment, including the arrangement of policemen, volunteers and supporting measures. 1.

This passage mainly tells us something about the stampede which happened in Shanghai’s Bund area several months ago, including the reasons why it happened and the measures authorities should take. It is now common to hear and read of security problems in public places, which post a serious challenge to the society. In public life, our behavior is in direct or indirect relationship with others, so it is of great importance for us to take public order into consideration. When in public places, we’d better keep away from big crowds. From my perspective, public places are crowded more often than not. Therefore, a series of prevention measures must be taken to guarantee public order. Besides, the governments should also tighten crowd control measures in order to better protect public safety. Last but not the least, it is high time we should pay attention to our own behavior.

Once upon a time some tiny frogs held a competition. The first to reach the top of a very high tower would be the winner. A big crowd gathered around the tower to see the race and cheer them on. The race began. No one in the crowd really believed that any of the tiny frogs would reach the top of tower. “They will never get to the top! They will never succeed!” someone said. One by one, the tiny frogs began to collapse (退下). The crowd kept shouting, “It is too difficult! No frog will make it!” More tiny frogs got tired and gave up, but one continued climbing, higher and higher. This one wouldn’t give up. In the end, he was the only one left—the only one to get to the top. The other frogs naturally wanted to know: How did the frog make it? One frog stepped forward to ask the winner. It turned out that the winner was deaf. He had won because he was able to keep his own mind. He was able to keep trying. He couldn’t hear criticism; neither could he hear praise. We learn a lesson from this story: don’t let others’ praise or criticism to hold you back on your way to succeed. In the competition, only a deaf frog got to the top of tower. He won the race because of his deafness, which made him stick to his goal and keep trying. This story indicates that those not listening to other’s criticism or praise are more likely to obtain what they are pursuing. Since our achievements largely depend on how we react to other’s feedback, it is essential to take a sensible attitude to it. As we all know, praise and criticism are part of our life and almost everyone prefers praise to criticism. Suppose you fail an exam, praise may help build up your confidence and bring you much pleasure while criticism may discourage you and get you down. When it comes to teachers’ praise or criticism, we might as well take it seriously. Praise as well as criticism is commonly employed to keep students motivated. So whatever you encounter, accept it willingly and use it to the fullest.
