(满分150分,完卷时间120分钟)

I. Listening Comprehension 略 II. Grammar and Vocabulary Section A

Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

(A)

Your house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment 21______(work) for you instead of against you. Here are some ways 22______ (turn) your home into part of diet plan.

Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(难为情的) when they’re in poorly 23______ (light) places-and so more likely to eat lots of food. 24______ your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.

Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people 25______ ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, 26______ cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.

Don’t forget the clock-or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, 27______ try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes, and while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on 28______ (relax) music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.

Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates 29______ easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when 30______ (use) a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.

(B)

We all regard receiving presents as a pleasant experience and yet it can be one of the most awkward situations. It is often difficult to look pleased when you receive a gift 31______ is entirely useless or the wrong size.

All you can do is exchange it after your friend or relative has gone home. However, you have no right to change an article purchased just 32______ it does not fit or is not to your liking. 33______ (bad) still, the agreement on the sale is between the person who bought it and the shop. So you will have to tell your favorite aunt that the T-shirt does not fit. But an exchange is not always that simple because there has to be a good reason for it. Either the thing has to be broken or unsuitable for the job it 34______ (intend) to do. For example, if the buyer was told that a switch was voice operated and later found out it was not, then action could be taken. You would have the

1

right to return it and get the money back.

But if you are returning something, 35______ the reason is, you will be expected to have proof of purchase. If the receipt cannot be found, then 36______ is possible to use another proof of purchase such as a credit card receipt. If all of these have been lost, you may have to rely on a witness.

Many big stores have a much more tolerant(宽容的) policy towards returns and see it as a gesture of goodwill to exchange goods 37______ question. Stores including Marks & Spencer are well known for their “no argument” policy on returned goods. However, shoppers should remember this is a privilege, not a right.

So if a shop 38______ (refuse) to exchange the goods or to offer a refund, the seller is likely to be within his legal rights unless there is something wrong with the goods. In that case, the boot is on the other foot. You have every right to demand a cash refund or a replacement, but only if you have returned it within a “reasonable” time.

Unfortunately, the law does not explain 39______ is meant by “reasonable”. Some shops and stores expect things 40______ (return) within a week of purchase, while others may permit a much longer time limit. In any case if you return a thing after what is considered a “reasonable” time, then all you are legally entitled to is the cost of repair.
