M: Don’t worry. I won’t spoil our honeymoon. We’ll make it if we leave immediately. Have you called the taxi? Text 4

W: I’m sorry I was late for class, Dr. Anderson, but I overslept.

M: Well, it’s OK this time, but you know it’s disruptive for the rest of the class. W: Yes, I know. You’re right. I won’t let it happen again. Text 5

M: You had your hands full and have been overworked during the last two months. I think you really need to go out and get some fresh air and sunshine. W: You are right. That’s just what I was thinking. Text 6

M: The operation went very well. Congratulations! W: But I’m not feeling very well, doctor! M: What’s wrong?

W: At first, I only felt a mild pain. I didn’t think painkillers were necessary. M: Oh? What’s going on now?

W: The pain is very severe and I can’t stand it!

M: There is nothing to worry about. The pain after surgery is usually easily managed with painkillers.

W: Please give me one at once! M: Wait a few minutes. Text 7

W: Hey, are you free this weekend? I’ll be on stage for the first time! M: Excuse me? On stage? Are you acting?

W: No, dancing! It’s my modern dance stage debut(初次登台)!

M: I didn’t know you’re a dancer! You must be so busy. How often do you dance? W: Twice a week usually, but this month, we’ve been rehearsing four days a week. M: Wow, I bet that helps you lose weight!

W: Actually, not really. After rehearsal, I’m always so hungry. I just eat and eat. M: But still, you get more exercise than most people, for sure. W: Why don’t you come see me perform Saturday night? M: Let me check my schedule. What time? Text 8

M: Hi, May. Did you see the football game on TV last night?

W: Yeah! Wasn’t it great? That Michael Owen can sure score goals. I have some questions about football for you. M: Sure, May. Go ahead.

W: What is it like to see an English football game?

M: It is really fun. The fans are really into the game and there are lots of families enjoying a day out together.

W: Really? I heard that it is very dangerous to go to a British football game. M: No, that’s not true anymore.

W: Do you want to go see a football game with me at the Workers’ Stadium? M: I would love to go.

W: OK, I will buy an extra ticket!

M: Oh, don’t worry. I’ll buy my own ticket.

W: It’s no problem. The tickets are easy to get. I will buy you one and you can pay me back!

M: Great. I’ll see you on Saturday. Text 9

M: I’m doing some research on American authors. Could you help me? W: Sure, who are you researching?

M: I’m thinking of doing Ernest Hemingway. I know nature was an important part of his life and work.

W: Yes, as soon as he became successful, he preferred to live in isolated places. All of the places he lived in besides the big cities were convenient for hunting and fishing.

M: While he was at school, he wrote for the student newspaper, which led him to his first job at the newspaper — the Kansas City Star.

W: Did you know that when he was 18 years old, he tried to join the army? It was World War I at that time, but he wasn’t allowed to join because of his poor eyesight.

M: He joined the Red Cross instead as an ambulance driver, that’s how he got to Europe.

W: During the mid-1920s, he wrote some of the most important works of 20th century fiction, both books of short stories: In Our Time and Men without Women. M: In four short years he went from being an unknown writer to being the most important writer of his generation, and perhaps the 20th century. During the Second World War he returned to Europe to report, where he met another woman, his fourth wife. W: After that he began writing The Old Man and the Sea, another amazing book, and in 1954 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

M: And in July, 1961, he committed suicide by shooting himself. W: Such a shame, he was another tragic genius. Text 10

Have you ever asked yourself the question: what machine works night and day without

stopping? Can you imagine that the answer is your body? Even when you are sleeping, your body is busy working. All the different systems of your body are in a constant state of activity, 24 hours a day. You are hardly aware of most of this activity. For example, your heart pumps about 2000 gallons of blood each day. It beats about 100000 times a day. You breathe about 23000 times a day. Your brain is the busiest of all your body parts. No other part of the body functions without first sending a message to the brain. On an average day, the brain receives and acts on more than a million messages from different parts of the body. On the outside of the body, things are happening, too. Your hair is growing. Your skin is changing, and your cells are dying and growing back. All of this goes on very slowly and quietly. You seldom notice these changes. Now you know why you are so tired at the end of the day! Make sure to get your rest each night. Your busy body needs it.
