Passage One
Both Rose and her husband had lost their jobs, and now they were living in and out of motels with their son, Jack. Often they worried about their car because the bank would take it if they didn’t pay for it on time.
One day, Rose found a wallet containing a credit card, an airline ticket to New York and $2,394 in cash at a shopping center in Los Angeles.
“For a second I thought about taking the money,” she said later. “But only for a second.”

Passage Two
For 20 years, people have been following the simple rules: Fat makes you fat. Fat gives you heart attacks. Eat it at your risk. So when we make another decision for the coming year to lose those 20 or 30 pounds, we can only wonder: Is there a better way to diet?
Yes, say a growing group of scientists and experts. The old advice obviously isn’t working. Fat isn’t the only crime. Filling up on rice and bread isn’t a solution. They argue that, among other things: sugar and white food, like bread, rice and potatoes, are diet destroyers. A diet that stresses meat and eggs but cuts out sugar and simple carbohydrates (碳水化合物) is more successful at helping people lose weight because they feel satisfied longer and won’t be eager to fill up on snack food (点心). Fat isn’t all bad. The simple message to lower (降低) fat ignores some important facts: Fat is necessary for the body to function correctly. There are good fats and bad fats. If not eaten too much, fat can actually help you diet because it makes food taste better and helps you feel full longer.
