Even though my grandfather was a farmer, my grandmother would iron (熨烫)his work clothes every day. I thought every old woman in the world did it. But as the years passed, I began to question this practice. Why did Grandfather need his work clothes ironed? Most days, he never

saw anyone but me and maybe a few other farmers.

One day when I was about 13, I asked Grandmother about it. I wanted to know why she

thought it necessary to spend time and effort pressing clothes that were seldom seen and would be no longer clean in just a short time.

She tole me that Grandfather wa the most handsome man in the world. She said he was her best friend and the love of her life. She loved every chance she got to show him off and make the rest of theworld jealous (嫉妒)that he was hers.

Later that day, I looked closely at Grandfather. His hair was thin on top, and his artificial teeth didn?t line up too well when he smiled. With apologies to the hundreds of machines pressing self-help books at this very moment that argue for the life-chaing benefits of happiness, it is my duty to say: It will not save you from death. But there have been a quantity of studies in recent years suggesting that happier people may live longer and that happiness could evern help protect against some health problems, like heart diseases.

According to a massive new study published in The Lancet, happiness has no such power. The data came from the Million Women Study in the U.K., which surveyed a million women between the ages of 50 and 69. Three years after joining the study, the women filled out a questionnaire about their happiness, and during 10 years of follow-up, electronic records let the researchers know how many dies, and how. Being in ill health was associated with unhappiness, so the researchers failed to include women who had already had cancer, heart disease, or strokes. That way, they could see if it was unhappiness alone that made people more likely to die. It did not. Peto believes that the previously established connections between unhappiness and earlier death were actually “reverse causality(反向因果关系)” in which unhappiness was by-product of the illness that led to death. “In our view, the previous studies haven?t been well done,” he said. “All that?s going on is ill health which actually was causing unhappiness and stress. There?s a sad old joke, where the question is “What?s the most dangerous place in the world?? and the answer is ?Bed. Look at the number of people who die in bed.? Well, that?s just a sad old joke, but that?s reverse causality.”

32, What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A. Sel-help books bring life-changing benefits of happiness.
