1. disability n. 既有可数又有不可数. 表示“残疾”用作可数,表示“无能,劳动能力丧失” 用作不可数;disable v. 表示“使残疾,使?能力丧失”; disabled adj. 表示“残疾的,伤残的”,常用于the disabled 表“残疾人”

people with disabilities = disabled people = the disabled 残疾人

Old age disabled him for hard labour. 年迈使他不能干繁重的工作。 2. hearing n. 听力,听觉 lose one’s hearing 听力失聪, 丧失听觉 eyesight n. 视力lose one’s eyesight=lose one’s eyesight丧失视力

3. ambition. n 抱负,志向 full of ambition 野心勃勃, 充满志气 ambitious adj. 有雄心的,有志气的

be ambitious of sth.== have the ambition for sth == long for sth.渴望得到某物 He is a man full of ambition. 他是一个胸怀大志的人. Everyone is ambitious of peace. 每个人都渴望和平. 4. noise n. 噪音 make noises 制造噪音,弄动静 noisy adj. 吵闹的,嘈杂的

The engine is very noisy at high speed.发动机高速运转时很乱人。 5. suitable adj 合适的,适宜的(=fit adj.) 常与for 连用。 be suitable for=be fit for对、、、适合,合适 be suitable to do=be fit to do 适合做某事 These storybooks are suitable for children to read. 这些故事书适合孩子们阅读。 The food is not fit to eat. 这种食品不适合吃。

6. beneficial(adj) 有益的,有好处的 benefit (n) 利益,好处(v) 对?有益 (1) benefit sb/sth = be beneficial to = be of benefit to 对?有好处,有益 (2)benefit from /by 从?中受益 (3) for the benefit of 为了?的利益 7. in other words 换句话说,也就是说 = that is (to say) 总结word短语

(1)in word 口头上 I don’t want you to tell me in word that you will study hard. (2)in words 用语言(来表达)一般置于句末

You don’t know how wonderful it is . It can’t be described in words. (3) in a /one word 一句话,简言之,总之

In a word, we must try our best to do the work. 总之,我们必须尽力做这项工作。

(4)get in a word插话 (5)have a word with sb与?谈谈 (6)break one’s word失信,食言 (7)keep one’s word遵守诺言 (8)word by word 逐字地,一字不变地 8. Clumsy

(1)笨拙的,不灵巧的

You, clumsy guy!You’ve knocked over my coffee! 瞧你这笨蛋!你碰翻了我的咖啡! (2)(对人)不灵巧的,不圆滑的

She is a clumsy girl. 她不是一个机灵的女孩. (3) be clumsy with sth在?方面不灵巧

be clumsy in doing sth 在做某事方面不灵巧

他使用筷子很笨拙He is clumsy with chopsticks. = He is clumsy in using chopsticks. 9. outgoing adj.外向的,友好的,外出的,离开的 outstanding adj. 突出的,显著的

outcome n. 结果 outlook n. 观点,展望,前景,景色 outweigh [aut'wei] v. 比...为重, 比...重要, 比...有价值 10. adapt (1) 使?适应;使?适合,适应。一般与to 连用, adapt、、、 to,相当于adjust ?to 调整,适应于 She adapted herself quickly to the new climate. 她很快就适应了这种新气候。

(2) 改编,改写(rewrite) adapt A for B 把A 改编为B This novel has been adapted for radio from the Russian original. 这部小说已由俄文原著改编成无线电广播节目。 11. cut out删除,切去,省略,停止

The doctor told me to cut out meat for my fat. 由于肥胖, 大夫叫我停止吃肉。

I cut out the paragraph in this article. 我删除了这篇文章的一个段落。

总结cut短语: cut up切碎 / cut down削减, 删减,砍到/ cut through凿穿 / cut off 切断, 使隔绝,

12. out of breath 上气不接下气 take a deep breath 做一次深呼吸 above one’s breath高声地 waste one’s breath 白费口舌 lose one’s breath 喘不过气来 hold one’s breath屏息

breathe (v) 呼吸,呼出 breathless (adj)气喘吁吁的,上气不接下气的 13. absence (n) 不在,缺席,缺少 absence of mind 心不在焉,精神恍惚 in one’s absence /in the absence of sb 在背地里,在某人不在时

absent (adj) 缺席的 absent-minded 心不在焉的 be absent from 不在,缺席 14. He was cut off from his fellows. 他和同伴失去联系。

15. annoy v 使? 不悦,惹恼 annoyed adj 颇为生气的 annoyance n 烦恼 常见用法: annoy sb with sth / by doing sth 因?惹恼某人,使某人生气 be annoyed at / about / by sth 因某事生气 be annoyed with sb. 生某人的气 16. all in all 总的来说

All in all, it was a great success. 总之, 是很成功的。 He has his faults, but, all in all, he is a good helper.

18. (1)当 A as well as B的短语为主语时,谓语动词与A保持一致.如: His wife as well as his children was invited to the party. He as well as I wants to go boating. (2)as well 也,还,同样

常放句末作状语,前面不用逗号分开; 有时也放于句首,后面常用逗号分开. 如: I can see how English is used in everyday life as well. As well, I can see how English is used in everyday life. 类似的结构:

(1) as /so long as 只要(引导条件状语从句) (2) as soon as 一?就?(引导时间状语从句)

(3)as far as I’m concerned 就我而言 as far as I know 就我所知
