“Turtle time!” loudly called out by one of my newly-found friends, meant the beginning of either a morning or afternoon shift at Turtle Camp in Nusa Penida, Indonesia. Upon arrival at the project each day, we would look eagerly for our names on the whiteboard to see which task we would be undertaking. Would it be the highly desirable “turtle feeding”, the pretty fun “tank cleaning”, the exciting “medicine administering” or the less appealing “fish cutting”? Fine in theory but not when every fly in Indonesia decides to crowd onto these dead fish while you’re cutting!

Life at the turtle project was fun because twice a day we got to hang out with sea turtles. By “hang out”, I obviously meant “work”, as we were on shift, but it certainly didn’t feel like work. Another fun thing was getting to know the other volunteers! With volunteers from all over the world, it was just common to hear Finnish being spoken, Australian slang mixed with French expressions and Swedes making plans to visit newly-found friends in the USA.

Of course, not all the time at Turtle Camp was consumed by volunteering. Scheduled activities included a trip to Crystal Bay, a beautiful paradise for swimming and sunbathing, an awesome beach bonfire complete with a beautiful sunset as well as our local co-workers showing off their guitar playing and singing skills.

Our time at Turtle Camp was capped off by setting free two of our turtles into the sea to begin their journey as independent turtles! Hopefully, the love and care provided at the turtle project would ensure that these turtles had a greater chance of survival in the big, wide and scary ocean. 1.Which task is less fun to the volunteers at Turtle Camp? A. Turtle feeding.

B. Tank cleaning.

Meditation has been around for thousands of years, starting as a religious practice. Hindu(印度教) holy books from around 1500 BC describe meditating on the divine (神),and art from this time period shows people sitting cross-legged and alone in a garden. In China and India around the fifth century BC, other forms of mediation developed. Several religions, including Taoism, Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity, had meditative ceremonies. In 20th-century Europe and America, secular meditation arrived from India. Rather than focusing on spiritual growth, it emphasizes stress reduction, relaxation, and self-improvement.

Although it still isn’t exactly mainstream, many people practise meditation. Mindfulness meditation, in particular, has become more popular in recent years. The practice involves sitting comfortably, focusing on one’s breathing, and bringing the mind’s attention to the present. Concerns about the past or future are let go. An individual can picture worries popping like a bubble or flying away like a butterfly.

Mindfulness is about increasing awareness and practising acceptance. To be present is to have sharpened attention. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that benefits your emotional well-being.”Among the emotional benefits are reducing negative emotions, increased self-awareness, and stress management skills. Asthma, depression, and sleep disorders are all conditions worsened by stress. Several studies have shown that patients with these conditions benefit from meditation.

Dr Robert Schneider, director of the Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention, says, “I have been researching effects of meditation on health for thirty years and have found it has persuasive benefits. The benefits of meditation are coming to be widely accepted by health professionals, business leaders and the media. It is now time for the medical profession to catch up.”

As far as we can see, there has been a puppet (木偶) tradition in most parts of the world. Although some of us think of puppets as children’s entertainment, they were—and often still are used to tell serious stories to adult audiences. Even in these days of special effects, the puppet theatre still has a special place in many cultures.

The best-known puppet characters in Britain are Punch and Judy, glove puppets with wooden heads. In summer, one basic play of about half an hour is performed on beaches all around Britain. Mr Punch, who has an enormous nose and wears a curved hat, gets into trouble and has arguments with his wife, Judy. There is the baby, Toby the dog, a policeman, a crocodile, and a hangman, and all of them chase Mr Punch. He, of course, invariably manages to survive to fight another day. In Belgium wooden puppets first appeared in the 1820s in cities like Liege. The Liege puppets are in fact string puppets without strings! They have a single metal rod attached to their heads, which means the puppeteers aren’t able to raise the arms and legs, but can move the body up and down and the head from side to side. Many of the stories used to be historical or religious but it is Tchantches, a comic character with patched trousers and a big black hat, who is the best-loved character today. Like Mr Punch, he is a simple man who is also greedy, quarrelsome and lazy. He makes fun of everyone,

but is often warm-hearted and tender.

In some place, the shadow puppet theatre of Java, two leather puppets, operated from below by sticks, are moved around behind a cotton screen. This type of theatre can also be found in other parts of south-east and central Asia. The stories are usually based on Hindu epics, and a traditional performance can last all night. The characters in these stories are brought to life by the dalang, who is a very special kind of person. He sits in the same place all night, operating dozens of puppets on his own. He manages to tell a long and complex story without a script, while also controlling the orchestra.
