The policeman slowly walked along the street. It was nearly ten o’clock at night. The wind and light had kept most people at home.
Halfway down the street, the police saw a man against a door, with an unlighted cigar (雪茄) in his mouth. As the policeman walked up to him, the man spoke quickly. “It’s all right, officer,” he said, “I’m just waiting here for an old friend. It is an appointment (约定) that was made twenty years ago. You think it funny to plan a meeting like this, don’t you?”
The man lit the cigar. The light showed a pale, square face. He was very well-dressed.
“Twenty years ago tonight,” the man went on, “I had supper at a restaurant with my friend Jimmy Wells. I was going to the west to try my luck, but Jimmy wanted to stay. We agreed to meet again exactly twenty years from the date and the time. That’s why I’m here.”
“What happened to your friend?” asked the policeman.
“I’m not sure,” said the man. “We wrote to each other for a while then stopped. But I’m sure if he is alive, he will keep his promise. We said we would meet at ten o’clock.”
“OK, I’ll be on my way, good night.”
The policeman continued on his way. Bob waited about another twenty minutes. Then a tall man went straight to the waiting man.
“Is that you, Bob?” asked the new comer.
“Is that you, Jimmy?” cried the man in the door. “You’ve grown so tall. Let me have a good look at you. You don’t look anything like Jimmy.”
“You are right,” said the tall man. “I’m a police officer. You are wanted by the New York police. But before we go to the police station, here is a note from your friend Jimmy Wells.”
Bob opened the small piece of paper. His hand shook as he read. Bob
I was on my way to meet you as we had planned. However, when you lit the cigar, I saw it was a face of a man that is wanted by the police. Somehow, I couldn’t do it myself. So I sent another police officer to do the job.

Think of the empty cities in zombie (僵尸) movies. The streets, the shops and the schools are still there just like they would be on a normal day, except there are no people to be seen. It is the emptiness that makes you scared.
Now a real-life “ghost city” is being built in the US. But luckily, it has nothing to do with zombies – it is going to be a place to test the technology of the future.
Called CITE – the Center for Innovation, Testing and Evaluation (创新测评) – the city is the idea of technology company Pegasus Global Holdings. Covering an area of 15 square miles, this small, empty city sits in the middle of the New Mexico desert (沙漠), since we can’t afford to test the latest technologies in the cities that we live in.
“It will be a true laboratory without safety problems that come with people living there. Here you can break things and run into things, and get used to how they work, before taking them out into the market,” Pegasus managing director Robert Brumley told technology magazine Wired.
In fact, without worrying about hurting people, anybody with a new idea can ask to test it in this city. Just think about the possibilities – A. driverless cars can move freely on the streets, B. homes with robots can be designed, C. shared bikes can be seen everywhere and D. energy sources like nuclear (核的) power can also be put to the test.
As good as the idea may seem, however, there are still doubts about CITE. “One of the most difficult things to do when developing these new technologies is to have them safely move around people, who can suddenly jump out in front of something,” Reese Jones, a beginner of Singularity University, US, Fortune magazine.
Jones is worried that, even if a technology does perfectly well in CITE, introducing it to a real city will still be a whole different story because there will be people living in the city.
But no matter what, perhaps we should wait until CITE is finished in 2019. Maybe it will turn out to work just fine.
34. Why do people need an empty place to build CITE?
A. Because the test will do well with the help of CITE. B. Because the test will cause danger in our daily lives. C. Because they can experience the new future technology. D. Because they can help people get used to the technology. 35. What can we learn from the article?
A. Anyone can ask to try out their new designs in CITE.
B. Things in CITE can easily be broken down and built again. C. Testing all new technologies in a real city will cause problems. D. People can suddenly jump out in front of some new technologies.
36. In the fifth paragraph, there’re four examples marked A, B, C and D. Please choose the one which
shouldn’t be there.
37. What is the main purpose of this article?
A. To offer a way to develop future technologies. B. To explain CITE and the problems to deal with. C. To show that CITE has got a bright future ahead.
D. To explain why CITE is very helpful to technologies.

Bullying (欺凌) is a serious problem at school. It makes students feel lonely, unhappy and afraid. It makes them feel like there must be something wrong with them. Some kids are even unwilling to go to school. In other words, it’s very important not to let bullying harm your life!
Okay, so there you are, and someone is bullying you, what do you do “in the moment”? ? Ignore (忽视) the bully. Don’t even look at him. Walk right past him if you can.
? Don’t get sad or angry. Even if you’re feeling really hurt, don’t let it show. That’s the bully’s
goal. You can talk about or write down your reaction later.
? Turn and walk away, or run if you have to. Remove yourself from the situation. Go to a place
where an adult is present.
? If you’re being called names, imagine that you’re inside a huge fish tank (罐) filled with white
fog. Nothing touches you. Practise by thinking of the worst things a bully can say to you, then letting the fog eat them up.
? If you’re being bullied again and again, there’s one “Most Important Thing” you should do:
Talk to an adult. Start with your parents. If the bullying happens at school, make sure your parents discuss it with a school official, not with the parents of the bully. Make it clear to the adult that you are really worried about what’s going on. This is especially true if the bullying is verbal (言语的) bullying.
