Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice。

Too often young people get themselves employed quite by accident, not knowing what lies in the way of opportunity for promotion, happiness and security. As a result, they are employed doing jobs that afford them little or no satisfaction. Our school leavers face so much competition that they seldom care what they do as long as they can earn a living. Some stay long at a job and learn to like it; others quit from one to another looking for something to suit them. The young graduates who leave the university look for jobs that offer a salary up to their expectation.

Very few go out into the world knowing exactly what they want and realizing their own abilities. The reason behind all this confusion is that there never has been a proper vocational guidance in our educational institution. Nearly all grope (摸索) in the dark and their chief concern when they look for a job is to ask what salary is like. They never bother to think whether they are suited for the job or , even more important, weather the job suits them. Having a job is more than merely providing yourself and your dependants with daily bread and some money for leisure and entertainment. It sets a pattern of life and , in many ways, determines social status in life, selection of friends, leisure and interest. In choosing a career you should first consider the type of work which will suit your interest. Nothing is more pathetic than taking on a job in which you have no interest, for it will not only discourage your desire to succeed in life but also ruin your talents and ultimately make you an emotional wreck (受到严重伤害的人) and a bitter person.

1. The reason why some people are unlikely to succeed in life is that they________. A have ruined their talents

B have taken on an unsuitable job C think of nothing but their salary D are not aware of their own potential 答案:B

2. The difficulty in choosing a suitable job lies in that________. A much competition has to be faced

B many employees have no working experience

C the young people only care about how much they can earn

D schools fail to offer students appropriate vocational guidance 答案:D

第二段提到“The reason behind all this confusion is that there never has been a proper vocational guidance in our educational institution.”

3. Which of the following statements is most important according to the passage? A Your job must suit your interest. B Your job must set a pattern of life.

C Your job must offer you a high salary. D Your job must not ruin your talent. 答案:A

第三段的首句说“In choosing a career you should first consider the type of work which will suit your interest.”其中的first与题干中的the most important为同义改写。 4. The best title for this passage would be________. A What Can A Good Job Offer B Earning A Living

C Correct Attitude on Job-hunting D How to Choose A Job 答案:D

5. The word \ A splendid B miserable C disgusted D touching 答案:B

根据“Nothing is more pathetic than taking on a job in which you have no interest,”我们可以判断pathetic应该表示贬义,因此答案就只能从B和C中选择;其次,根据后面的两个动词“discourage”和“ruin”,我们就可以确定答案为B。

The advantages and disadvantages of a large population have long been a subject of discussion among economists It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worded intensively. Thus , each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population. Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them.

One of the difficulties in carrying out a world—wide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials. In the developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources, it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate, whatever the consequences may be. In the highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex. A decreasing birth rate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened. Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline. 6. A smaller population may mean_________.

A higher productivity, but a lower average income B lower productivity, but a higher average income C lower productivity, and a lower average income D higher productivity, and a higher average income 答案:D

见第一段,人口多时“each person produces less and this means a lower average income?”

7. According to the passage, a large population will provide a chance for developing_________. A agriculture

B transport system C industry

见第一段最后一句,“Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them。”

8. In a developed country, people will perhaps go out of work if the birthrate_________. A goes up

B is decreasing C remains stable D is out of control 答案:B

第二段指出,“A decreasing birth rate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods.”

9. According to the passage slowly rising birthrate perhaps is good for_________. A a developed nation B a developing nation

C every nation with a big population D every nation with a small population 答案:A

第二段最后一句,“the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline发达国家政府更希望看到人口缓慢增长而不是??”

10. It is no easy job to carry out a general plan for birth control throughout the world because_________.

A there are too many underdeveloped countries in the world

B underdeveloped countries have low level of industrial development

C different governments have different views about the problem D even developed countries may have complex problems 答案:C

“One of the difficulties in carrying out a world-wide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials.在世界范围实施总体的计划生育不是一个简单的工作”,原因在开头提到“态度??各国不同。”

Languages are remarkably complex and wonderfully complicated organs of culture. They contain the quickest and the most efficient means of communicating within their respective culture. To learn a foreign language is to learn another culture. In the words of a poet and philosopher, \many languages as one speaks, so many lives one lives. \body: while one is a part of the other, neither can function without the other. In learning a foreign language, the best beginning would be starting with the non—language elements of the language: its gestures, its body language, etc. Eye contact is extremely important in English. Direct eye contact leads to understanding, or, as the English saying goes, seeing eye-to-eye. We can never see eye-to-eye with a native speaker of English until we have learned to look directly into his eyes. 11. The best title for this passage is_________. A Organs of Culture B Brain and Body

C Looking into his eyes D Language and Culture 答案:D

12. According to this passage, the best way to learn a foreign language is A to read the works of poets and philosophers_________. B to find a native speaker and look directly into his eyes C to begin by learning its body language D to visit a country where you can study 答案:C

In learning a foreign language, the best beginning would be starting with the non-language elements of the language:its gestures, its body language, etc. C。 13. According to this passage, gestures are_________. A spoken words

B a non-language element
