Many of you may want to study abroad after graduating from high school because we tend to think overseas universities are better than domestic (国内的) ones. But at the same time, more and more international students are coming to study in China. A record-breaking 397,635 international students came to China in 2017, and China is now the third most popular
destination for overseas students behind the US and the UK, according to a report released by the Student.com website on Feb 12. With an average of 10 percent year-on-year growth, the number of international students in China has doubled since 2005. If present growth rates continue, China will indeed challenge the UK for the second place by 2020.
The trend is thought to be mainly due to a growing academic reputation and large government support.
More and more international students are coming to China to get master ’s and doctorate degrees. According to the report, of the international students seeking a degree in China, 71 percent are undergraduates. However, the strongest growth in the number of students can be seen in master’s and doctorate degrees.
In addition, the international standing of Chinese universities has improved a lot. For
example, the Chinese mainland has 24 universities in the global top 500, according to this year ’s edition of the QS World University Rankings, one of the most famous university rankings. The Chinese government has also given a large amount of support to encourage
international students to come to China. According to the report, the Chinese government
granted 40,600 scholarships to international students in 2017, meaning that international students get nearly five times the quantity of scholarships they would have received 10 years ago. Last year, 40 percent of all international students new to China received government sponsorship (资助).
“As its government continues to invest (投入) in improving the quality of the education system and its universities keep rising in the global rankings, we expect China to attract students in greater numbers and diversity,” the report commented.

Reporting has taken me to many strange places. The oddest is the National Airborne Operations Centre, the plane that carries American defense secretaries around the globe. Over the years the plane ---- or to be precise, planes, as the US Air Force runs four of them, each nearly identical ---- has carried me to more than a dozen countries as a member of the small travelling press corporation that accompanies the civilian head of the Pentagon overseas.
Add together the flights I have taken on the E4-B, some as long as 19 hours, and I have spent weeks of my life aboard, most of which in the windowless conference room used to house the press, fitted with banks of computers and secure telephones that military officers and polit ical leaders would use in the event of a war. Most of the aircraft is off-limits to us, though on long trips the press may be invited to the secretary’s cabin to listen to those off-the-record talks.
The strangest part of flying aboard the E4-B is mid-air refueling, made necessary by the plane’s great weight, thanks to its unusual equipment and special shield to protect it from the
electromagnetic pulse produced by a nuclear explosion. During an aerial refueling, up to four oil tankers fly in from American air bases around the world.
To watch a refueling from my seat is to witness a fine metaphor for an ageing superpower.
