There are many idioms in English. An idiom is a phrase that we can’t understand from the
meaning of each word. The following are some of them. As the crow flies
When a bird flies from place to place, it takes the most direct route. But when people drive, they
have to follow roads and often go farther. When people give a distance “as the crow flies”, they mean the shortest distance between the two points, not the distance you would have to travel by following roads.
As Dan and his mum drove along the river, they could see the beach on the opposite side, Dan asked “How far is it to the beach?”
“It’s only about a quarter of a mile as the crow flies” his mother said. Blow hot and cold
In one of Aesop’s Fables, a man blow on his fingers to warm them up and then blow on his soup to cool it down. In both cases, the man is opening his mouth, but what comes out is different. If a person says one thing and later says the opposite, we say that the person is blowing hot and cold. “Is Felicia going to try out for the soccer team this year?” Stacy asked.
“I don’t know,” Tricia replied. “ Last week she was saying yes,but this week she’s saying no.
She’s really blowing hot and cold.” Break the ice
Nowadays people use the phrase to refer to ending an awkward silence by beginning a conversation.
It was the first day of summer camp. The four girls began to make their beds in silence. None of the girls knew each other, and no one knew what to say. Finally, one of them broke the ice by saying “ Hey, where’s everybody from?” Bury the hatchet
In native American culture, when two nations agreed to end their war, they buried the hatchet. So to bury the hatchet is to make peace with someone else.
Colin could not excuse his sister for breaking his tennis racket. Finally, his sister said, “Colin, can’t we bury the hatchet?”

A couple from Miami, Bill and Simone Butler, spent sixty-six days in a life-raft (救生艇) in the
seas of Central America after their boat sank.
Twenty-one days after they left Panama in their boat, Simony, they met some whales(鲸鱼).
“They started to hit the side of the boat,” said Bill, “and then suddenly we heard water.” Two minutes later, the boat was sinking. They jumped into the life-raft and watched the boat go under the water.
For twenty days they had tins of food, biscuits, and bottles of water. They also had a fishing-line
and a machine to make salt water into drinking water — two things which saved their lives. They caught eight to ten fish a day and ate them raw (生的). Then the line broke. “So we had no more fish
until something very strange happened. Some sharks(鲨鱼) came to feed, and the fish under the raft were afraid and came to the surface. I caught them with my hands.”
About twenty ships passed them, but no one saw them. After fifty days at sea their life-raft was
beginning to break up. Then suddenly it was all over. A fishing boat saw them and picked them up. They couldn’t stand up. So the captain carried them onto his boat and took them to Costa Rica. Their two months at sea was over.
41. Bill and Simone were traveling__________ when they met some whales.

Believe it or not, optical illusion(错觉) can cut highway crashes.
Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent
using a simple optical illusion. But stripes, called chevrons(人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down.
Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japan's success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other
patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.
Excessive (too great) speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic
accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards (danger) are the greatest curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges.
Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can initially cut the
average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.
Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than
they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents. 46. The passage mainly discusses ____________.
A. a new way of highway speed control B. a new method of training drive C. a new pattern for painting highways D. a new type of optical illusion 47. On roads painted with chevrons, drivers tend to feel that ____________.
A. they should avoid speed-related dangers. B. they are driving in the wrong lane C. they should slow down their speed D. they are reaching the speed limit 48. Compared to horizontal bars, the advantage of chevrons is that ____________.
A. it can keep drivers awake B. it will have a longer effect on drivers C. can cut road accidents in half D. will look more attractive 49.The American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety plans to____________. A. try out the Japanese method in certain areas B. change the road signs across the country C. replace straight, horizontal bars with chevrons D. repeat the Japanese road patterns
50. What of the following is true about straight, horizontal bars painted across roads? A. They are suitable only on broad roads. B. They are falling out of use in the United States.
