Sherlock Holmes is considered by many people as the greatest detective in fictional literature. He is, in fact, more famous than his own creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the popular series of stories, Holmes is described as “tall and lean, pope-smoking, always in his cape and speaks in a splendid manner”. Doyle gave Holmes’ address as 221-B Baker Street, London, and to this day some visitors to London still go to Baker Street to search for 221-B. Of course, there never was really any such address. Holmes’ flat was supposed to be shared by the lovable, but sometimes clumsy Doctor Watson who went around with Holmes trying to solve crimes before Holmes did. Poor Dr Watson lost out to Holmes every time.

Doyle gave Holmes a masterly skill of deduction---the ability to come up with interesting conclusion from the simplest clues found at the scene of a crime. Doyle said that the description of Holmes was modeled on one of his lecturers at Edinburgh University where he studied medicine. That man was Dr Joseph Bell. Sherlock Holmes first appeared in Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet published in 1887. Holmes was so loved by all that when his author killed him off in one of his stories, readers wrote in anger to complain. They refused to allow Holmes to die! Holmes was brought back to “life” and appeared in further stories.

The stories of Sherlock Holmes have been reprinted many times ever since then. Today we can

No matter what you do in a company, it’s important for you to get along well with your boss. Your relationship with your boss is probably the most important one you have at work. Why? Having a healthy relationship with your boss usually means you’re more satisfied with the work you do and have less stress. Your boss can be a key supporter in helping you achieve your long-term goals. He or she knows your company’s goals and knows what the company looks for in future managers and leaders. Here are some tips to keep the relationship healthy.

Show respect. Your boss is responsible for your work and the work of your colleagues. That can a significant burden. Try to look at things from your boss’s view. Try to treat him or her with

respect.

Don’t be afraid of your boss. Some bosses can be very serious, but remember, your boss needs you. Your performance is often the key to the success of your boss.

Do your best. Try to live up to the performance expectations set for your job. In doing your best, you’ll gain greater satisfaction from your work, earn the trust of your boss and help the organization achieve its goals.

Don’t try to hide problems. Can you find the problem when you meet the problem? If you can’t and the problem becomes serious, let your boss know as soon as possible. Offer solutions and ask for additional advice. Don’t let your boss find out about the problem from someone else.

Manage your anger. Blowing up in front of your boss solves nothing, but suggests clearly that you can’t control your emotions. This doesn’t mean you have to sit and keep silent when you’re angry. But learn how to communicate your anger. If anger management is difficult for you, sign up for a course to help you deal with it.
