Christmas has never looked as beautiful as it is now, when this one-foot-tall mini tree grew from a pothole(坑洼) in the streets of London.

London pothole gardener Steve Wheen, 34, has created over 150 little gardens so far, the smallest one of which is just one-inch-square.

“I really enjoy the reactions of people who come across my work and love them,” said Steve. “London can be so grey, especially at this time of year. When I was thinking about how to brighten it up, gardening came to my mind.”

Steve has been in pothole gardening for four years, mainly around the streets of London. His pothole gardens are made with some plants he chooses from his local garden centre. Each of them usually costs between five and ten pounds. Although they are often temporary to the streets, Steve is sure that they can be in people's mind for a long time, if they are lucky enough to come across these small gardens while they go about their daily lives.

“I'm always surprised when I ask people what they think the message is behind my work,” he said. “Often they think I'm against or in honour of something. One person even considered that I was marking the places where people had died in car accidents.”

“I think in a city like London, where it's easy to feel short of green space, my message can be seen as a green one and that's fine with me,” he said. “The environment is something we all need to be thinking about more and more. But most importantly, it's all about making people smile and giving them an unexpected moment of happiness.”

If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are.

Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with a fare of two US dollars a kilometre. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least sign of anxiety.

The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration card to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge.

The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate(价钱). From then on, they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly(相应地).

With so many loopholes(漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to those who love to take “petty advantages”. But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have attended to their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms; and workers always give an honest account of the exact hours

2

they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman”.

In a society of such high moral practice, what need is there for people to be on guard against others?

4.While taking a taxi in Finland, ________.

A.a passenger can go anywhere without having to pay the driver B.a passenger pays two US dollars for a taxi ride

C.a passenger can never be turned down by the taxi driver wherever he wants to go

D.a passenger needs to provide good faith demonstration(证明) before leaving without paying 5.What can we know about the big hotels in Finland from the passage? A.Most of them are poorly managed. B.They provide meals for any diners. C.They provide free wine and charge for food.

D.They provide meals for only those who live in the hotels. 6.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A.The workers in Finland are paid by the hour.

B.The workers are always honest with their working hours.

C.The workers and their bosses will make an agreement in advance about the pay. D.The bosses in Finland are too busy to check the working hours of their workers.

A food chain is a simple way of explaining how each living thing gets its food. For example,a simple African food chain might consist of three parts:(1)trees and bushes;(2)giraffes; and(3)lions. Each link in a food chain is food for the next link. Food chains always start with plants and end with animals.

Plants are at the bottom of the food chain. Scientists call them producers, because they use light energy from the sun to produce food from carbon dioxide and water through photosynthesis(光合作用).Animals, unlike plants, can't produce their own food. Instead, they must eat plants or other animals. This is why scientists call them consumers.

Consumer animals fall into three categories. Herbivores(食草动物) eat only plants. Carnivores(食肉动物) eat only other animals. Omnivores(杂食动物) eat both plants and animals. In

3

addition to producers and consumers, there are also decomposers. These organisms, such as bacteria and fungi(真菌), feed on decaying matter. They help the food chain by speeding up the decaying process that releases minerals back into the soil to be absorbed by plants as nutrients.

Most food chains have only four or five links in them. As you go up a food chain, the amount of energy at each level diminishes, because some of the energy is lost in the form of waste or is used up by the organism at that level. That is why it takes many plants, for example,to feed a few giraffes who in turn feed one lion.

Most animals are part of many different food chains, because they must eat more than one type of food to satisfy their energy needs. All of these interconnected food chains form a more complex structure called a food web. Humans, for example, are at the centre of a very complex food web, because we tend to eat many different types of plants and animals.

7.Which of the following tells us the African food chain? A.Trees, giraffes and lions live on one another. B.Giraffes eat lions and lions feed on bushes. C.Lions live on giraffes and giraffes eat trees. D.Bushes live on lions and lions eat giraffes.

8.The underlined word “diminishes” (in Paragraph 4) probably means “________”. A.changes B.decreases C.disappears D.increases 9.Those that may lie in the centre of the food chain are________.

A.the omnivores B.the decomposers C.the herbivores D.the carnivores 10.What would be the best title for this passage?

A.The types of plants and animals B.The differences among the living things C.Three categories of the consumers D.The food chain in the natural world 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
