There once was a young man who went to India. In those times, we didn’t have airplanes or many other kinds of modern transportation as now. So the young man went to India on foot. He hadn’t been to India before. And when he got there, he saw a lot of fruit. In India they have plenty of fruit to sell, but much of it is expensive, because they can’t grow much because of the water situation. He saw a big basket of very red and long fruit. And it was the cheapest in the shop.
So he went up and asked, “How much is it per kilo?” And the shopkeeper said, “Two rupees.”
Two rupees (印度货币)in India is nothing; it’s like dirt. So he bought a whole kilogram of the fruit and started eating it.
He ate some of it. Oh, my God! His eyes watered, his mouth watered; his eyes were burning, his head was burning; and his face became red. As he coughed, he jumped up and down, saying “Ah! Ah! Ah!”
But he still kept eating the fruit!
Some people looking at him shook their heads and said, “You’re crazy, man. Those are chilies(辣椒)! You can’t eat so many; they’re not good for you! People use them as a condiment (调味品), but only a little bit to put into food for taste. You can’t just eat them like that; they’re not fruit!”
But the stupid young man said, “No, I can’t stop! I paid money for them, and now I’ll eat them. It’s my money!”
And you think that young man was stupid, right? Similarly, we sometimes do a lot of things like that. We still continue just because we’ve put money, time, effort and love into it, just like the man who ate the chilies and felt so bad but couldn’t stop because he didn’t want to waste the money he had paid.
So even if you’ve lost something, let it go and move on. That’s better than continuing to lose.

I will never forget the Australian hotel my parents and I stayed in last summer. It was quite small, hot and uncomfortable.
The worst thing about the hotel was the lift. It was very small. There was only one for the whole hotel. We were on the fifth floor. It was a long way down to the ground floor by the stairs.
The hotel was full. There was always a long line for the lift. We spent a long time waiting for it each day. Worse still, it often stopped working. We got very angry about that.
One morning we had got the lift down to the ground floor. I had forgotten my jacket. I went back to my room for it. I pressed the button for the lift and it came right away. It stopped halfway down. Alice lived in the country, but one year she decided to visit the capital city to do some shopping. She stayed at a hotel beside the central market.
