In the olden days, about when your dad’s grandpa was a kid, there were no televisions, no video games, and not even many cars! People ate all their meals at home, or sometimes at another family’s home. They didn’t know the words “fast food” because all the food was prepared at home. Going out to eat at a restaurant was something that didn’t happen very often.

When most families could afford to buy cars, some began to go for drives. And they might go out for fish and chips or hamburgers as a special treat, so eating places like roadhouses started to open.

However, the modern history of fast food began in 1912 with the opening of a fast food restaurant called the Automat in New York City. People got their food by putting coins in the vending machine (自动售货机).

Later, people wanted to stop, eat in their cars and be on their way again, so drive-in restaurants became popular in America in the late 1940s. But sometimes this wasn’t a very good service because everything was cooked and served in the same way. Also, eating in a car could be a bit messy and the food might be too hot or too cold!
