W: Excuse me. Can we get a table for four people?
M: Sure. But you may need to wait for a few minutes. Please sit in the waiting area and take a look at the menu first. (4) Text 5
M: I know what I want for Christmas, Mom. It’s called “Need for Speed”. With the machine you bought me, I can play it with my friends. (5)
W: I never should have bought you that. You never go outside anymore. Text 6
M: That was one of the best performances I’ve ever been to! Did you see how many turns Misty Copeland did? (6)
W: Uh…yeah. She was…impressive.
M: You don’t sound so enthusiastic. Didn’t you like the show?
W: Well, I didn’t actually see much of it. The music was so calming and quiet that it sent me to sleep. (7)
M: Are you saying that you fell asleep? How could you miss one of the most significant ballets of our time? I thought you loved Swan Lake. (6) W: Yes, but I feel clear now.
M: I’ve fallen asleep at shows before, but it was because they were boring or it was too hot in the theater. What a shame! Text 7
W: Which airline should we take for our trip to Beijing this year? Last year, we took Singapore Airlines, remember? It was very comfortable but expensive.
M: We flew Air China the year before, and it was good. It’s a very safe airline.
W: I liked it, too, but I couldn’t find any flights for the time we want. I did find some for Hainan Airlines, though. (8)
M: I’ve taken them before, when I lived in New York. I didn’t know they fly out of Los Angeles. Let’s book through them.
W: Good. Now, the next thing we should do is figure out where to stay. (9) Obviously, we won’t use hotels. But it will cost us a lot of money to rent an apartment.
M: Hmm…I’ll find out if my uncle is still living in Thailand. He was doing a project there in a university. If he’s still gone, we would probably be able to stay in his Beijing apartment. (9) Text 8
W: Good evening. Do you have any time to help me with this bike? (10) M: Sure! That’s what this workshop is for. (10) What’s wrong with your ride?
W: That’s the problem — it isn’t much of a ride right now. I can’t get the drive chain to turn. M: Hmm…have you tried oiling it?
W: No, I brought it here immediately. I need my bike tomorrow morning. (11) That’s how I get to work!
M: OK, don’t worry… What’s your name? (10) W: Julia.
M: All right, Julia! I’m Max. (10) Let’s put some oil in the right places here…and…well, it’s still stuck! Let’s check the wires that lead to the brakes. Maybe they need to be replaced… No, they look pretty new. And now, I’ll try the brakes… Yes, I think this is the problem. Something’s stuck here. (12) Let me see…I think I can change something here quickly.

W: Thank you! How much will it cost?
M: Not a penny! But you have to promise you’ll come back one day soon so you can learn more about fixing your own bike. I’ll teach you how to make your wheels straight next time. It looks like they need it. ★ drive chain:传动链 Text 9
M: It’s already Tuesday night and I have an interview the day after tomorrow. (13) (16) Will you please get my suit and shirt ready?
W: Which shirt do you want, (14) the white one with black buttons, or the blue one with white buttons?
M: Well, I think I’m going to wear my gray suit. So, the blue one is better. (14) W: Fine. Should I take it to the dry cleaner’s?
M: It isn’t dirty. It is only wrinkled. It only needs to be ironed. (15) W: I’ll do better than that. I’ll steam it, too. (15)
M: But we don’t have a steamer anymore, remember? My brother used it last Saturday while he was visiting. Then he took it home with him. We haven’t replaced it. W: I remember. I’ll use a non-modern method to steam your clothes. (15) M: What’s that?
W: I’ll hang them up in the bathroom while I take a hot shower. That should take out most of the wrinkles. After that, I’ll iron it. (15) M: That’s a great idea!
W: Did you finish studying the interview questions?
M: Yes. But I still need to read through the company’s literature, too. I should be very familiar with the department I want to get into. (16) W: But you don’t have that much time left. M: I know. Wish me luck.
W: Good luck! You’ll get it all done, and they’ll certainly hire you. Text 10
Good morning, and thank you for tuning in to the Weather Channel. (20) We provide international weather information 24 hours a day. On September 28th, a very large earthquake shook the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. As a result, a tsunami wave that was about 2.5 meters high hit the island of Palu. It traveled at 800 kilometers per hour, (17) and destroyed everything in its path. This is a big disaster, with many of the survivors being left homeless, without food and clean water. More than 1500 people have died and many more are hurt. Several countries promised to send aid, and now help is starting to come. China’s first aid shipment has already arrived at the airport of Kalimantan Island. The aid mainly consists of tents and water treatment equipment. More goods from China are planned in the next few days. Besides the aid coming from China, the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia also bought some supplies locally which will be taken to the earthquake area. (18) The U.S. has promised to send help, and a major German company has sent a team of people to help rescue people. The Indonesian army has set up temporary hospitals to help with all of the people who are sick and hurt. More medical supplies are needed immediately. (19) If you can help in any way, you should send us an email or call us at 83-098-772 for more information. (20)
