16、Have you ever felt a strong emotion (情绪), but not been able to find the right word to describe it? Maybe there is a word for it, but you just don’t know it yet. One man is trying to help fix this problem. University of East London psychology researcher Tim Lomas is making a list of words from different languages around the world. The words have no exact equivalent(对等的) words or phrases in the English

C.Teenagers.

language. Perhaps the most famous example is “schadenfreude”, the German word describing pleasure at the bad luck of others.

Borrowing from as many languages as he could, Lomas searched for “untranslatable” experiences and published them in The Journal of Positive Psychology last year. His study is called the Positive

Lexicography Project. Lomas has focused mostly on happy moments. He hopes that learning these words will enrich (使丰富) people’s lives. So now, thanks to the Portuguese(葡萄牙语), when you run your fingers through a loved one’s hair you can call it “cafune”. Or you can use the Spanish word “estrenar” to describe the feeling when you wear or use something for the first time. The Germans describe the good mood at the end of a working day as “feierabend”, while the Norwegians describe the feeling of sitting around a warm fireplace as “peiskos”.

“The limits of our language are said to define the boundaries of our world,” Lomas wrote for The Conversation. “If we lack (缺乏) a word for a particular positive emotion, we are far less likely to experience it.”

17、Tony and Jane give their opinions about keeping pet dogs.

Keeping pet dogs is a good idea, says Tony I think people should be allowed to keep pet dogs. There are lots of reasons for this. First, dogs are really cute. It’s nice to pick them up and hold them in our arms, and it’s wonderful to see them growing up quickly. Second, your dog might not be dangerous but by simply barking he can keep away a burglar who might think of entering your house. Finally, we can also learn about life and death from dogs. Young people can learn how to care for others and how to respect all living things by keeping a pet dog. I think keeping pet dogs is something everyone can enjoy. Keeping pet dogs is not a good idea, say Jane In my opinion, it is never a good idea to keep a pet dog. Firstly, pet dogs create a lot of mess. They leave fur and hair on the floor, on beds and on sofas, and they need to be washed daily. Secondly, we should remember that not all dogs are friendly. Some dogs bark at people they do not know. A few dogs bark all night. This stops their neighbors from getting any sleep. A small number of pet dogs even bite people. Lastly, you have to make sure pet dogs are in good health and provided with good pet products. Paying for dog food and seeing thevetwhen dogs are ill can be expensive. I believe that people should not keep pet dogs. 1.Tony would probably think it____ to put pet dogs on beds. A.uncomfortable C.dangerous

B.acceptable D.untidy

2.From the underlined part, we can guess “vet” means“ ____”. A.places where people can buy dog food B.places where people can treat dogs

C.people who can train dogs to do something useful D.people who provide medical care for dogs 3.Tony and Jane disagree on ____. A.the growth of pets B.the sound made by dogs C.the money paid for pets D.whether dogs need washing daily

18、Over the past decade, an increasing stress has been placed on the importance ofScience, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related classes in primary, middle and high school education in the

U?? S. The reason for this direction is well founded:research and test scores from the 1980s and 1990s showed that our students had fallen behindtheir international peers in all of these subject areas. Education officials, teachers andparents all felt that the situation needed to be changed, and quickly. However, in the rushto play catch?up in STEM?related areas, there's one important aspect that is beingneglected (忽略): the Fine and Performing Arts, particularly drama. It's long been understood that a study of drama at the primary, middle and high schoollevel helps students improve in many areas, such as self?confidence, self?expression, communication skills, teamwork, and imagination. Most educators and parents agree thatall of these are important for students to develop at any age, but it is difficult for the sameparents and teachers to prioritize (优先安排) study time and classroom time to a subject likedrama over subjects like Math, Physics or Computer Science. It's even more difficult forpolicy makers and school officials to channel funds (资金) towards classes like drama, when the skills arts subjects develop are considered “soft skills.” When the modern world iscalling out for “hard” skills, like those needed to succeed in the tech?driven 21st century, how can they possibly prove it is reasonable to spend their funds that are becoming smallerand smaller on anything but STEM subjects? The short answer to the question “why spend time and money on drama?” is that dramaeducation has been scientifically proven to improve students' achievement, especially incommunication skills that are very important to a STEM education. As we develop studentswith highly refined skills in STEM subjects, it's equally important that we train the teachersthat will support continued growth in these areas. An active, communicative teacher is thebest way to get students on board in the study of STEM subjects, which can be unbearablydry. The best way to develop active communication skills? Drama. The next area in whichthe communication skills can be developed is publication and conference presentation.Drama improves students' public speaking skills necessary for STEM students to effectivelypresent papers in conferences and their writing skills necessary to publish papers. It's alsovery important for students to be able to work well with one another. In the real STEMworld, almost all scientific work happens in teams. Without the “ soft ” people skillsnecessary to navigate (导航) all of these interactions, no matter how technologically skilledone becomes, he or she will be at a disadvantage without the ability to communicate andwork in teams. While the nationwide trend (趋势) to focus on playing catch?up in STEM education isreasonable, practical, and absolutely necessary, it's important not to forget the huge effectarts, specifically drama education, have on the overall education of our children. Thequestion parents, educators, and policy makers should be asking themselves is not “can weafford to support arts education in schools?” but rather “can we afford not to?” 1.Why did Americans start to stress STEM related classes? A.Because the world has moved into a tech?driven century. B.Because STEM classes have long been neglected in America.
