Passage one

Handwriting has become a dying art, now that kids start using keyboards as soon as they begin school. But writing things out by hand may be an important way we train our brains, several studies suggest.

Writing by hand is different from typing because it requires using strokes (笔画) to create a letter, rather than just selecting the whole letter by touching a key, says Virginia Berninger .These finger movements make the brain take part in such activities as thinking, memory, and language. Handwriting helps children learn letters and shapes, improves their ability to express their ideas.

A study by Berninger found that in grades two, four, and six, children wrote more words, faster, and expressed more ideas when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard.

A separate study by researchers found that children who practiced printing by hand had more active brains than kids who simply looked at letters.

It’s not just children who benefit from writing things out by hand. Adults learning a new language remember its characters (文字)better if they write them out by hand than if they produce them with a keyboard.

As more people spend their days on the computer, says a scientist,“keeping people in handwriting skills could be a useful exercise that helps to improve our abilities.”

In the United States, teaching is very important. If teachers do not teach well, students complain. If many students do not understand, people think that the teacher does not do a good job. The teacher has big responsibility(责任) to make sure students understand what they are required to learn. In a sense, students are consumers and the teacher is offering services.

7

Students have the right to evaluate(价价) their teachers, and they usually do so at the end of each course. That evaluation includes explanation, preparation, using good examples, answering questions, and organization of classes.

Students should read the textbooks and books that teachers ask them to read before classes. Without reading them, they will find it very difficult to understand the class. Basic courses on doing research and writing papers are taught at the beginning of the course. They teach things very concretely(具体地) and clearly. Students are expected to apply what they have learned to their studies.

Classes are usually divided into lectures and seminars. There are some lecture classes, where the teacher just gives a lecture, and students ask questions at the end. Most graduate level classes are lectures and discussions. Taking part in discussions is very important. Higher level classes do very little lecturing. They emphasize (强调)discussion and presentation by the students. 66.Good teachers should_______

Passage Three

Mountain climbers around the world dream about going up Mount Everest (珠穆朗玛峰). It is the highest mountain in the world. But many people who have climbed the mountain have left waste material that is harming the environment. A team of Americans is planning the largest clean-up effort ever on Mount Everest. They will make the risky(冒险的) trip up the mountain next month.

The team of eight Americans will be guided by more than twenty Sherpas of Nepal(尼泊尔夏尔巴人). Their goal is to remove all the rubbish they see. They will spend two months cleaning up the mountain by gathering oxygen bottles, batteries, drinking cans, human waste and other kinds of rubbish. They are expected to remove at least three tons of trash in large bags.

Team leader Robert Hoffman is making his fourth trip up the mountain. He says he hopes to bring Everest to the condition it was in before the first successful climb fifty years ago. He says he hopes the effort will influence other people to clean up the environment closer home.
