Wayne Winters began walking the heavily trafficked streets near his home in Farr West, Utah earlier this month with a sandwich board containing an unusual request. “Need Kidney 4 Wife,” the sign reads. Winters’ phone number and his wife Deanne’s blood type are also included.

According to local news station, Deanne has severe kidney failure and is in need

of a transplant(移植). “I’m trying to get a kidney for my wife,” the devoted husband told the news station. “My wife has stage 5 kidney failure. She’s on dialysis(透析)and she doesn’t like it because it’s horrible.” He added, “It’s really hard today, and this is the worst I’ve ever seen her. She doesn’t look good.”

Desperate to do something to help his suffering wife, Winters, who meet Deanne 26 years ago, took to the streets armed with a new suit, new shoes, and his sign to beg for a kidney.

Though the old man tells he doesn’t “walk real fast”, Winters’ nontraditional method of see-king for a kidney for Deanne has garnered plenty of attention. In addition to the motorists and passers-by who have seen Winters out walking “miles a day”, his search for a kidney has now hit the Internet and attracted the attention of millions more people. “I feel like I’m doing the right thing,” he declared.

Winters said he was inspired to pound the pavement on behalf of his wife after seeing a story online about another man who did the same thing and got national attention for his search. Rush hour, he explained, is his favorite time to walk up and down the streets because drivers are “slowed down”. “They can look at my sign, they can’t go home in a hurry.” He added to the station.

Though he hasn't had any success yet, Winters remains confident he will find a kidney for Deanne, and insisted that he won’t rest until he does. What’s more? Even after a match for Deanne is found, Winters has stated he will continue to raise awareness about kidney do-nation because it is now his “life mission”.

24. What inspired Winters to wander around the streets to find a kidney for his wife? A. His difficult living conditions. B. His sick wife’s bitter expressions.

C. The determination to find a match for Deanne’s kidney.

D. A person’s experience to get national attention for the similar situation. 25. What does the underlined word “garnered” in the 3rd paragraph probably mean? A. escaped

B. ignored

C. acquired

D. demanded

26. Which of the following can best describe Winters? A. Stubborn and indifferent.

B. Diligent and patient. C. Strict and warm-hearted. D. Determined and affectionate. 27. What can we learn from the text?

A. Deanne’s kidney is in the process of a transplant. B. Winters will do more meaningful things in the future. C. Drivers won’t go home noticing the sign. D. Few people pay any attention to Winter’s sign.

selenium-containing enzyme(含硒的酶)in the human body may be a tool to fight cancer, a study published in a US medical journal on Wednesday said. The study said researchers at Karolinska Institute in Sweden, one of the world’s largest and most well-known medical universities, treated cancer in mice with these molecules, and then observed rapid tumor-killing effects. They hope that this new principle for cancer treatment can be extended to treat cancer in humans.

Selenium is a chemical element that is an essential micro-nutrient. A selenium-containing enzyme, called TrxR1, can be used to support the growth of various cells and protect them from oxidative stress(氧化应激). Oxidative stress is the imbalance between the production of free radicals(自由基), which are highly reactive with other molecules, and the body’s ability to counteract or to repair the resulting damage.

However, in several forms of cancer, raised levels of TrxRl could be detected. Researchers analyzed almost 400,000 different molecules to find new ones that would more specifically control TrxR1 and found three different types which proved to be active as anti-cancer medicines. The researchers effectively treated over 60 different types of cancer cells under laboratory conditions with these molecules. Normal cells, however, were much less sensitive to these molecules.

“This effectiveness against cancer may be a result of cancer cells’ seemingly greater sensitivity to oxidative stress when compared to normal cells, which in turn

can be used in cancer treatment,” Prof. Elias Armer at Karolinska Institute, who led the study, said. “This seems to work in mouse models and we are therefore hopeful that this principle for treatment can be developed for humans, even if this requires many years of further research,” he added.

28. What does the underlined word “ones” in the 3rd paragraph probably refer to? A. anti-cancer medicines C. cancer cells

B. molecules D. normal cells

29. What is Prof. Elias Armer’s attitude towards the anti-cancer molecules? A. Skeptical.

B. Curious. D. Unconcerned.

C. Optimistic.

30. What was published in the US medical journal on Wednesday? A. Finding of certain molecules to fight cancer. B. New principle for treatment of cancer in human. C. Selenium is an essential micro-nutrient. D. Working principles of oxidative stress.

31. Where is the passage most likely to have been taken from? A. A science report. C. A lesson plan.

Zhou Haiyan is happy that up to 1,200 endangered white cranes, a third of the global population, spend winter in lotus root fields near Poyang Lake, China’s largest freshwater lake.

Zhou, a photography enthusiast, nearly missed the cranes this winter as local farmers at Nanchang Wuxing Farm planned to plant rice to replace lotus root(莲藕)last spring to avoid damage caused by the cranes. “If the farmers made it into reality, the cranes would lose an ideal place for finding foods,” said the 46-year-old former TV host. “Lotus root contains large amounts of starch(淀粉), a favorite food of the cranes who strive to find food in the lake,” said Dai Nianhua, a researcher with the Jiangxi Provincial Academy of Sciences. Yet, farmers regard the cranes as a threat as they will have no harvest next year if the cranes eat the lotus root under the

B. A book review. D. In a fashion magazine.

water.

To help the cranes stay at the farm, Zhou, together with many bird-lovers, launched an online crowd-funding campaign on WeChat in March last year. They collected 2.1 million yuan from 100 donors, including overseas Chinese from the United States and Canada. “We rented 498 mu (33 hectares) of lotus root fields and bought 75,000 kg of lotus root for the birds,” Zhou said. “We also strengthened the farmland, built new roads and a water control system.”

Before the cranes arrived in November, bird-lovers managed to build the country’s first privately funded white crane protection zone that combines the functions of scientific research, education and photography. “The white crane protection zone did not spend a single penny of the government’s, but it effectively protects the habitat,” said Dai, adding that the government should give more policy and financial support to the crane protectors.

For Zhou, funding is still the biggest problem. They have only 180,000 yuan left in their coffers(金库), far from enough to pay the rent and buy lotus root for next winter. “We are see-king more funding,” Zhou said. “We must keep this habitat, so humans and cranes can interact closely.”

32. What is the author’s main purpose of writing the 2nd paragraph? A. To explain to us why lotus roots are cranes’ best-loved food.

B. To remind us that cranes are a danger to farmers’ harvest of lotus roots. C. To tell us why the local farmers planned to plant rice to replace lotus roots. D. To warn us that the white cranes always cause damage to farmers’ lotus roots. 33. The functions of the protection zone cover the following fields except for ________.

A. ticket sales B. educating people C. scientific research D. taking photographs

34. What does the third paragraph mostly focus on?

A. The support from overseas Chinese to help white cranes.

B. The efforts made by bird-lovers to help the cranes. C. The main source of the funds collected by bird-lovers. D. The reasons for launching online crowd-funding campaign. 35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Challenges Facing Lovers of White Cranes B. White Cranes-an Endangered Bird Species

Recently, our Student Union invited a local expert on folk customs to give us

students a lecture on shadow play.

It started from 2:30 and lasted nearly two hours last Saturday at the school hall. All the students and teachers listened to it attentively. Shadow play is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment in which the performers hold the human figures made of animal skins or hard paper boards with colored paintings. The figures are reflected on the curtain through the light, singing and dancing controlled by the performers with the silk string. Its written records date from the Song Dynasty. It plays an important role in the invention of the modern movie and the development of the movie cartoons.

Through the activity, we all have a better understanding of shadow play. Meanwhile, we get to like our ancient culture better.

Yours, Li Hua
