阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

Traffic jams can create some of the most frustrating (令人懊恼的) situations that could possibly happen.

Here are some tips for avoiding traffic jams:

The radio has more than just music. Check the local news station for the latest traffic report. Or go online and check traffic cameras before you set out. If there is a jam, you'll be prepared and can try another route.

Take the road less travelled. Although highways may be the most direct route, back roads can be much less crowded, saving you the frustration of stop-and-go traffic.

Rush hour isn't just a nice nickname. The morning and afternoon traffic lasts for several hours, but they're still called “rush hour” for a reason—everyone's on the road and in a hurry to get somewhere. Treat rush hour like bad weather—if you don't have to go anywhere, stay off the roads.

There are also some tips for those unavoidable traffic jams: Don't break the law. You've gone 30 feet in 30 minutes and all of a sudden you see people using the shoulders(紧急停车道). Not only is this illegal, there's a good chance they'll get caught.

Pay extra attention to zigzaggers (Z字形行进者). When some people are anxious, they may start changing lanes(车道) every 5 seconds or cut you off. Keep checking your windows and mirrors for these lane changers.

Look for an escape. If it is possible to exit the road safely, do it. Carry a map or GPS unit, so that you can adjust your route mid-trip

if needed.

Be courteous. Good manners could help you avoid a possible accident. Allow people in from a lane that is ending. Speeding up to keep them out increases your chances of an accident.

21.To avoid traffic jams, we are advised to do the following EXCEPT ________.

A.getting traffic news before leaving B.choosing back roads C.avoiding rush hour D.changing lanes

22.“Rush hour” gets its name because ________. A.cars run faster during the time B.cars run slowly during the time C.people go to some place in a hurry D.people walk more slowly than usual 23.What should we do to avoid zigzaggers? A.Keep checking our mirrors. B.Keep watching back windows. C.Drive slowly to let them in. D.Drive quickly to keep them out.

24.When meeting a traffic jam, we should ________. A.change lanes every 5 seconds B.use the shoulders as lanes C.adjust our route D.give up the trip

从Look for an escape 一段中“Carry a map or GPS unit, so that you can adjust your route...” 可知。

B

Rising temperatures, rising sea level and other trends are having an effect on the world's sea turtles. All female turtles come ashore at nesting beaches, dig nests in the sand, lay their eggs and then return to the sea. Erosion(侵蚀) of nesting beaches caused by rising sea level and more intense storms adds the potential for further dangers to nesting beaches where people, dogs and rats already prey (捕食) on the eggs of sea turtles.

Climate change directly affects the reproduction of sea turtles in three ways. First, sea level rise will affect significant nesting beach areas on low-level sand beaches such as Bonaire, the Maldives and the Great Barrier Reef. Second, rising temperatures increase the chance that sand temperature will exceed the upper limit for egg incubation (孵化) which is 34℃. Third, rising temperatures bias(使偏向) the sex ratio toward females because temperature during incubation determines the sex of the egg. Loggerhead turtle nests in Florida are already producing 90 percent females owing to high

temperatures, and if warming raises temperatures by an additional 1℃ or more, no males will be produced there.

Adult feeding patterns are also affected by climate change. Sea grass beds are in decline, water temperature is higher on intertidal sea grass flats, and coral reefs, typically feeding grounds for green turtles, are affected by bleaching.

Sea turtles have existed for more than 100 million years and have survived ice ages. As a result, they may be able to respond to unfavourable nesting temperatures as they have in the past, by seeking out new nesting sites. It may, however, take decades or centuries for sea turtles to re-establish and stabilise their habitats, and steady human development of coastal areas makes the availability of new habitat for them very limited.

25.What will happen if sand temperature is higher than 34℃? A. More females will be born. B. Turtle eggs will not hatch. C. Females will lay fewer eggs. D. Newborn turtles will die.

26.What do we know about Loggerhead turtles in Florida? A. Most of them die young.

B. No more males are produced now.

C. They already have an imbalanced sex ratio. D. They can hardly survive the high temperature. 27.In what way does climate change affect adult turtles? A.They can't find enough food. B.They have lost their habitat. C.Their living habits are changed. D.Their feeding patterns are affected.
