Ⅰ.阅读理解
George Bizos, Mr Mandela's lawyer, said he believed he still wanted to live, despite his poor health. The former leader of South Africa was sent to hospital on Wednesday night because of suffering from a recurring lung infection (反复肺部感染). Mr Mandela has been in hospital four times in just over two years and three times have been in the past four months.
Mr Bizos defended (辩护) Mr Mandela during his 1960s trial (审判) fighting white minority rule, and now remains a
famous human rights lawyer. And he recently represented families of striking miners killed when the police opened fire on them outside a mine in Marikana last August. He said that Mr Mandela was stronger than his appearance might suggest.
“Of course I have been saying to people,‘you should remember Mandela is no longer that young.’ Even if he goes for check-ups every now and then, I don't think people should be worried about him,” Zuma, South Africa's President told the BBC.“Let us slow down the worries. He is responding very well and he is in good hands of very good doctors. All of the above will bring comfort to all of us. I would like to really say the country must not panic.”
On Thursday Barack Obama, the US President, said he was deeply concerned about the state of Mr Mandela's health. Mr Obama said he believed Mr Mandela was as strong as he had been in character and in leadership over so many years. President Obama said it was inevitable that people should be concerned about news about Mr Mandela. After Mr Mandela was released from prison, he became the first black President of South Africa.“We are deeply concerned about Nelson Mandela's health — he is a hero, I think, to all of us,” he said on Thursday as he met four leaders from sub-Saharan Africa.
