M: I’ll go to Anne’s house — she’s got a computer. (Text 6)
W: Did you watch the football match last night? It was a pretty exciting match.
M: Of course I did. But the team I support could have got more goals but they just didn’t take the chances. So they deserved to lose, really. Never mind … We’ll see how they’ll do tonight! W: Don’t you remember we’ll have a history exam tomorrow? M: Yeah, but history doesn’t bother me. (Text 7)
M: Where do you come from, Lily?
W: I come from a small city and I love it. You’ll find everything from Brazilian food to Spanish food. But if I go out with my family we usually eat Italian food. M: That sounds great.
W: What I find the most magic about the city is the outdoor celebrations — they take place all year. And then of course there’s the underground city which is basically a huge shopping center with over 2,000 shops. It is a bit too big. (Text 8)
W: What kind of social activities do you enjoy?
M: Well, I like going to the cinema or perhaps to a café or dance. I’m fond of dancing to music but I don’t like parties much. I’d rather have a small group of friends over for a meal. W: Do you have any special plans for this weekend?
M: Well, I will have no time for my hobbies because I have to help my father with a project. He’s trying to research our family history, but he’s not very good at using the Internet. W: I know you like traveling as well.
M: Yeah. I’m going to Canada for two weeks next year. I’m planning to travel around Mexico and Brazil if I can manage it. (Text 9)
W: Today writer Jack Spears is going to tell us about his writing day. Jack, some people think that writers write when they feel like it and that it is more like a hobby than a job. Would you agree?
M: Of course not. Although it’s only recently that writing has become my only job, I’ve never seen it as a hobby. Even when I was a child, I took my stories very seriously. When I was a teacher, I used to start writing at about 9
o’clock in the evening, and go on until about two in the morning. W: And what about now?
M: I get up at seven in the morning six days a week and go for a 30-minute run. On Sundays I go swimming. Sitting at a computer is so unhealthy. I think all writers should at least go for a walk during their working day. W: Where do you work?
M: I have my own office, but in fact I could work in the bedroom, in the sitting room, anywhere in the house if I wanted to, even on the kitchen table. But then I’d have to clear everything away at the end of the day and I wouldn’t like that. (Text 10)
W: Now let’s look at some of the best things going on in our town in July. From the fifteenth to the eighteenth, the traveling Triple Theatre Company will be entertaining our children in the River Concert Hall. Activities include storytelling, drama, and art. After last year’s disappointing last-minute cancellation, I’m sure we’re all really looking forward to what the company has to offer.
Don’t miss a great night out on Saturday 18th. The first of the Open Air Concerts in the Park starts off with music from the 1980s. The fun starts at eight and goes on until midnight, when the show ends with a fantastic firework display. The concerts continue throughout the summer. The second one in July is on 31st. There’s more outdoor entertainment with Talk Theater’s performance of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night in the Abbey Ruins on Saturday 25th. Bring an umbrella because this performance takes place whatever the weather, but please note there is no performance on Friday because the company has made a booking mistake. The performance will be in another town on that day! If you’ve bought a ticket for Friday, sorry, but you will be able to get your money back.
