by Dan Thomans
Have you ever been barefootŵģ waterskiingIt's just like nomal waterskiingbeing pulled along behind a boat at 40mphbut without any skisˣIt sounds scary but it's amazing! My cousin used to take me watershiingand that's where I first learnt to stand up and balanceBut I moved on to barefoot waterskiing when I did it for a laugh with some friendsAnd I loved it
Barefoot waterskiing is one of the most popular water sports there isto watchanyway! When someone jumps really high and then landsit's wonderfulAnd you didn't need expensive things like boardsalthough a wetsuitӾ£is a good ideaBut catching your toes on things in the lake can hurtI gusess you can't help getting water up your nose when you start learningtooas you have to lie almost flat in the water before you pull yourself upbut it's OK Now I'm experiencedI've leaent not to attemptԣnew moves in rough water as it never goes wellInsideI make sure I limit myself to skiing directly behind the boatwhere the water's calmerI ask the boat drivers to warn me about big waves comingalthough they can't always see them
Finding time to practice regularly is hard as I'm still at schoolbut I'm not going to get any prizesIf I want to learn a new moveI need to repeat it over and overand that's not easy in winter when it's coldLots of skiers say they'll continue during cold weatherbut not many do
So I'm often the only one out on the lake!

33What might Dan write to a friend about his barefoot waterskiing AI avoid going out when the weather gets a bit colder
BIt's a fantastic water sport to watch but many people don't enjoy going to see it CThe boat travels along in the water at quite a speedand it's very exciting! DIf I have more time to practiceI'm hopeing to get a prize
34Fourteenyearold Miguel Diaz talks about an exciting science projectLast month I got the chance to take part in an underwater research project in an area of the Gulf of Mexicoī壩 called the Flower GardensA team of professionalרҵģ researchersled by the scientist DrMatt Phillipswas trying to learn more about the fish and various creatures that live in this part of the seaThe Flower Gardens are a long way from the shore and we spent three days on a boat The team used a piece of underwater equipment called a Remotely Operated Vehicle ROV to collect informationThe ROV could measure water depth and temperature and it also had a camera
that sent live film back to the boatThe ROV was great funIt was controlled by a computer on the boatand I was allowed to operate it a few times
Howeverthe thing I enjoyed most was diving into the waterAt firstI was quite frightened mainly because I couldn't see land in any directionBut as soon as I jumped into the waterI wasn't afraid anymoreIt was amazing to see the colourful fish swimming around and I could see all the ways to the Flower Gardenswhich are almost 30metres down
I will never forget the Flower GardensThe trip was like a holiday but I also learnt new things about science and research projectsThe team was very friendly and everyone was happy to explain what they knew about the seaIt was a great opportunity and it has made me think about my goalsĿ꣩ in lifeThe experience will definitely ϶help me work harder to become a scientist
