In 1883, an engineer named John Roebling got an idea to build a bridge between New York and Long Island. However, bridge-building experts (专家) around the world thought that it was impossible. It had never been done before.
After much discussion he persuaded his son Washington, a great engineer, that the bridge could be built.
The project started well, but a few months later, an accident took the life of John Roebling. Washington was badly hurt and he was not able to walk or talk.
Although he was handicapped (残疾), Washington never lost heart. He still wanted to finish the bridge and his mind was still as sharp(敏锐) as ever.
But all he could do was move one finger. So he decided to make the best use of it. By moving his finger, he slowly began to be able to “talk” with his wife.
He touched his wife’s arm with his finger, “telling” her that he wanted her to call the engineers again. Then he used the same way to tell the engineers what to do. The project went on again.
For 13 years Washington gave his instructions with his finger on his wife’s arm, until the bridge was finally finished.
Today the Brooklyn Bridge stands as a monument (纪念碑) to one man’s unbeatable spirit.
It is also a monument to the engineers and their teamwork, and to their faith in a man who was thought to be mad by half the world.

Love, Angel of Joy

“Hi, sweetheart, how is school going?” asked my father.
“Daddy, I can't do this. I try and try but I just don't get it. I don't know if I am ever going to learn to read Braille. It’s too difficult.” I cried.
Daddy just held me in his arm and said, “Do you still remember the day when we went to the temple which is on the top of a mountain? When we were climbing the mountain, my legs started to ache (痛). You sat down and cheered me up, 'The mountain is covered with fog, so we can't see the temple. But I know it is there. I will make sure you will climb up to it.'”
“That day you showed me that just you can't see something does not mean it is not there. So although (尽管) climbing the mountain was difficult, I knew I would get to the top.”
I was clear what my dad wanted me to understand.
I went back to school and started to work hard. Very soon I could read.
One of my classmates said, “You are lucky, you know, you have at least seen the world. I have just heard it. I have been told there are many colors in this world but I don't understand what color means.”
