Language experts say that spoken English was almost the same in the American colonies and Britain 200 years ago. Americans began to change the sound of their speech after the Revolutionary War in 1776. They wanted to make it different from the British in language in the
河北省衡水市枣强中学2019-2020年高一上学期11.3高一英语期中冲刺卷6(无答案)
same way they separated themselves from British government.
Some American leaders proposed major changers in the language. Benjamin Franklin wanted a whole new system of spelling. His reforms were not accepted. But his ideas did influence others. One was Noah Webster.
Webster wrote language books for schools. He believed that United States should have a system of its own language as well as government. Webster published a dictionary of the American language in 1828. It established rules for speaking and spelling the words used in American English.
Webster wrote that all words should be said in the order of the letters that spell them. This is why Americans use the letters “e-r” to end many words instead of the British “r-e.” He spelled the word “center,” for example, “c-e-n-t-e-r,” instead of the British “c-e-n-t-r-e.”
Webster’s rule for saying every part of a word made American English easier for foreign settlers to learn.
The different languages of many people who came to the United States also helped make American and British English different. Many of their foreign words and expressions became part of English as Americans speak them.
Sometimes Americans and British people do not understand each other because of different word meanings. For example, the word “jumper” in Britain means a sweater. In the United States, it is a dress. The British word “brolly” is an “umbrella” in America. And the British call potato chips “crisps.” All of these differences led British writer George Bernard Shaw to joke that Britain and America are two countries separated by the same language! 27.What does the underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refer to ? A. Spoken English in America B. Written English in America. C. Spoken English in Britain.
D. Separating themselves from the British in language.
28. Why did American want their language to differ from British English? A. Because they found British English hard to speak.
B. Because they wanted to have their own language and government. C. Because they found British English hard to spell.
D. Because foreign settlers wanted them to change their language.
29.Why do Americans use the word “meter” instead of the word “metre”? A. Because Benjamin Franklin didn’t like the word “metre”. B. Because the word “meter” was absorbed from other languages.
C. Because Webster thought American English should be made easier for foreign settlers to learn. D. Because Webster thought the word should be said in order of the letters that are spelt.
30. Which of the following is NOT one of the reasons why English began to change in America? A. The government leaders. B. Noah Webster.
C. Immigration to America.
D. The difficulty Americans had in understanding the British.

How to Be a Great Best Friend
Everyone wants to be a great best friend but doesn’t know how or where to start that perfect friendship. The following will help you.
Be your own best friend first. 31 If you can’t respect yourself, then you can’t respect others. Understand what values are important to you and stick to them. Seek out others who honor those values because you’ll only end up hurting yourself and possibly others if those people don’t have the same values as you.
Trust each other. 32 All you have to do really is make sure you can both trust each other. Don’t try to trick or use your friend to your advantage; you need to make them know they can trust you.
Learn to listen. Nobody likes a best friend who just talks and talks, but never listens. If you’re a chatterbox, try to develop good listening skills. Whenever your best friend says something, listen carefully and say something. 33 If they ask for advice, listen carefully and give them the best advice you can.
Care for your best friend. If your best friend is upset, ask them what’s wrong. They might not tell you straight away, but they should in the end. 34 Understand that certain things are private (私下的), and trust that they’d be just as patient (耐心的) with you if you were in their shoes.
Let your friend have other friends, too. If your best friend picks another friend over you, try to be friends with their friend, too. 35 Everyone is always looking for new friends. But never leave the old one; your loyalty (忠诚) is what the other person expects and counts on every day.
A. Learn how to respect yourself.
B. Maybe you guys can be a group of friends !
C. Don’t interrupt (打断) while they’re talking to you. D. Best friends are the most valuable friends you have. E. If they don’t tell you, don’t get angry at them. F. To be a great best friend really doesn’t take much.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
My father asked me to chat with him for a while. Actually, I was unwilling to listen to his talking endlessly as he always did. My father was a lawyer, but I never wanted to go to law school or follow his path through life.
As expected, he cleared his throat (喉咙) and started to say, “Er.… What.…What do you really want to do in the future?\ I was silent for a moment playing with the cellphone. I kept thinking, “Should I tell him my true thoughts? What if he gets angry? What if I let him down?” Later I replied, “Well, I want to be a writer.”
I guessed this may be not the answer he would expect. But he answered surprisingly, “Interesting idea!” I was shocked, speaking in a low voice with hesitation (犹豫). “Are you serious, Dad?”
“Well, you need confidence and good preparations, and you still have plenty of time. You need to find out what you really enjoy now. Look, it’s late. Let’s take the boat out tomorrow morning, just you and me. Maybe we can catch some crabs (蟹) for dinner, and we can talk more.”
Early next morning we packed up the equipment (装备) and set off along the coast. We didn’t talk much, but enjoyed the sound of the seabirds and the sight of the coastline.
There were no big waves and blinding sunlight at that time. “Let’s see if we are lucky,\said, and picked up a cage with a rope tied to it and threw it into the sea. We waited a while, then my father stood up and said,” Give me a hand with this.” Then we pulled up the crab cage onto the deck (甲板).
To our joy, the cage was filled with dozens of crabs. Squatting(蹲)down, we watched them for a moment. At first they fought against each other to climb out hard, trying to escape. Many were pulled back into the cage. Later, some gave up, but there were still some crabs trying to escape again and again.
