two of them false started, so they were disqualified. That left only one to complete. It would have been difficult enough, not having anyone to race against, even though the time on the clock is important.
I watched the man dive off the block and knew right away that something was wrong. I’m not an expert swimmer, but I can tell a good dive from a poor one, and this was not exactly medal quality. When he resurfaced, it was evident that the man was not out for gold—his arms were waving in an attempt at freestyle. The crowd started to laugh. Clearly this man was not a medal competitor. out.
But in those few awful strokes, the crowd had changed.
No longer were they laughing, but beginning to cheer. Some even began to stand and shout “Come on, A clear minute past the average swimmer, this young man finally finished his race. Just a short year ago, he had never even swum, let alone race. His country had been invited to Sydney. In a competition where athletes remove their silver medals feeling they have somehow been cheated out
of gold, or when they act so proudly in front of their competitors, it is nice to watch an underdog. 21. The crowd changed their attitudes because _______. A. they felt sorry for the young man

D. they meant to please the young man
22. From the passage we can learn that the young man _______.

23. According to the passage, “it is nice to watch an underdog” probably means _______. A. it’s amusing to watch a man with awful swimming skills B. it’s amazing to watch an ordinary man challenging himself C. it’s cheerful for athletes to act proudly before their competitors D. it’s brave enough for some athletes to remove the silver medals 24. Dear SJ,
Losing a best friend is never easy.
Your problem, is not just that you miss your best friend, it is that you feel empty and lost without her friendship.
It takes time to get over a lost, and during that time, your mind is getting used to a new way of being. This is usually a good thing, even if it feels like a bad thing.
Now that you are on your own, you are being forced to learn to be by yourself and to rely upon your own inner voice for guidance. I am sure that this feels strange for you, but if you can hang on for a bit longer, it may work to your advantage.
Best friends are cool, but it is important to know the difference between missing someone and being too independent upon them.
At your age, girls do tend to stick together and having a good boyfriend may not yet be the better choice. Your friend is leaving you, her best friend, for a boyfriend. Boyfriends are completely different from best friends. The distinction is that boyfriends come and go, while girl friends often stay in your life throughout high school, and even afterwards. It is a completely different sort of bond.
I suggest that you take advantage of this period in your life to expand your horizons. Enjoy the freedom of having no best friend for a while, and hang with the group. By the time your former best friend breaks up with her boyfriend, you will be in a completely different place, a far better place.
And, by the way, next time you feel empty and lost, try to write about it in a diary. In several months, you will look back and read it with curiosity about yourself. “Who was I then, and what could I have been thinking?”
25.Judging from the letter, SJ’s problem was that she didn’t know _______ . A.whether to give up her best friend
B.what to do without her best friend C.whom to choose between two friends
D.how to stop missing her former friend
26.The underlined part “a new way of being” (in Paragraph 3) refers to the situation in which SJ has to _______.
A.find a new friendship C.learn to give up
B.live without her boyfriend
D.learn to be independent
B. Try again!
C. Compete for Gold! D. Break a Record!
27.The writer believes by the time SJ’s former friend loses her boyfriend, SJ will _______.
A.take revenge on her former friend
B.comfort her former friend
C.feel more independent and confident
D.continue friendship with her former friend 28.What does the last paragraph seem to suggest? A.Unhappy experiences are easy to forget.
B.eeping a diary helps correct oneself. C.SJ will get over her problem soon.
D.One shouldn’t forget the past experiences.

The Queen’s English is now sounding less upper-class, a scientific study of the Queen’s Christmas broadcasts had found. Researchers have studied each of her messages to the Commonwealth countries since 1952 to find out the change in her pronunciation from the noble Upper Received to the Standard Received.
Jonathan Harrington, a professor at Germany’s University of Munich, wanted to discover whether accent changes recorded over the past half century would take place within one person. “As far as I know, there just is nobody else for whom there is this sort of broadcast records,” he said.
He said the noble way of pronouncing vowels (元音) had gradually lost ground as the noble upper-class accent over the past years. “Her accent sounds slightly less noble than it did 50 years ago. But these are very, very small and slow changes that we don’t notice from year to year.”
“We may be able to relate it to changes in the social classes,” he told The Daily Telegraph, a British newspaper. “In 1952 she would have been heard saying ‘thet men in the bleck het’. Now it would be ‘that man in the black hat’. Similarly, she would have spoken of ‘citay ’ and ‘dutay’ , rather than ‘citee’ and ‘dutee’ and ‘hame’ rather than ‘home’. In the 1950s she would have been ‘lorst’, but by the 1970s ‘lost’.”
The Queen’s broadcast is a personal message to the Commonwealth countries. Each Christmas, the 10-minute broadcast is put on TV at 3 pm in Britain as many families are recovering from their traditional turkey lunch.
The results were published in the Journal of Phonetics.
29. The Queen’s broadcasts were chosen for the study mainly because ______.
A. she has been Queen for many years. B. she has a less upper-class accent now. C. her speeches are familiar to many people. D. her speeches have been recorded for 50 years.
30. Which of the following is an example of a less noble accent in English?
A. “dutay” B. “citee” C. “hame” D. “lorst” 31. We may infer from the text that the Journal of Phonetics is a magazine on _________.
A. speech sounds B. Christmas customs C. TV broadcasting D. personal messages 32. What is the text mainly about?
A. The Queen’s Christmas speeches on TV.
B. The relationship between accents and social classes. C. The changes in a person’s accent.
D. The recent development of the English language.

Less than one year after France imposed a nationwide ban on smoking in most public places, it will, from Jan. 1, 2009, extend the ban to bars, restaurants, hotels, nightclubs—and the most cherished of all cafés.
Ireland and Italy show that countries with long-standing smoking traditions may introduce bans fairly smoothly, as they did in 2004 and 2005.
In Germany, where regulations vary locally, Berlin will join France on Jan 1. But fierce critics of the new law in France say it all but destroys the café's basic function to serve as the socio-economic glue of society.
Cécile Perez, owner of La Fronde, a typical Parisian neighborhood café, said “In the morning, street cleaners in bright green uniforms sip coffee next to well-dressed businessmen; at lunch hour, working-class types rub shoulders with those of the latest fashion at the bar, while couples of all ages rub noses over salads; during the after-work rush, there is a steady soundtrack of clinking glasses combined with conversation; the constant, no matter what time of day, is the smoke that drifts through the air in curls and clouds, seemingly unnoticed.”
“Our motto in France is liberty, equality, fraternity,” Olivier Seconda, a regular at the café, said. “The café is the place that represents that. You’re free to smoke, everyone pays the same price for a beer and different kinds of people talk with one another. This new law goes against that.”
Seconda expects the ban to be felt even more strongly in small villages far from Paris, where the café is often the only means of social activity. “People already miss the space that allows people of all walks of life to share something—even if it is sometimes no more than a few words and the smoke floating between them.”
33.Cécile Perez mentions the curls and clouds of smoke drifting through the air to ______.
A.describe a friendly atmosphere C.support the ban on smoking
B.show the beauty of his own café D.remind us of something unnoticed
34.Olivier Seconda implies that ______.
A.the café provides people with enough liberty, equality, and fraternity B.people, regardless of their social classes, enjoy equal rights in a café C.the new ban on café smoking should be put in effect only in villages D.people would not find fun in a café without smoking a cigarette 35.The passage is written to _______.
A.show the writer’s personal opinion against a new law B.provide information for law-makers to pass a new law C.tell why some people are unhappy about smoking ban in cafés D.compare attitudes to a law, held by people from different countries

书面表达(One possible version) Dear Sophia,
I am glad to hear from you. To be honest, I have the same experience as you. But you have to know that procrastination is the thief of time. The following advice may help you overcome it soon.
The most effective means to solve this problem is that you can make a “to do” list. For example, you can write “Finish home work before Saturday night” on your plan. If you manage to finish it, you can reward yourself. Otherwise, punish yourself. What’s more, you can find a person to remind you to finish your work efficiently from time to time. Different people have different efficient times. But it doesn’t matter what time it is. Just don’t waste time, following the schedule strictly. Last but not the least, do it now, just from now.
In a word, don't spoil yourself. Although you have a long way to go, the first step is very essential. Good luck!

Starting in 2012, now the global event that is celebrated annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving is the brainchild of 92nd Street Y, a cultural center in New York City and the United Nations Foundation.
As the name indicates, Giving Tuesday is meant to restart the charitable season and therefore is observed by raising funds for local non-profit organizations and schools, organizing food and clothing drives, and conducting random acts of kindness. While the easiest way to participate is by donating to your favorite charity, this day can be celebrated in many other ways too. You can give back by volunteering at your local shelter or food bank, or even by donating blood. If all else fails, a purchase from the growing number of organizations that give a portion of their sales to charity will do the trick.
But perhaps the best way to celebrate the day is those nearest and dearest to you. When I was a boy there were no smart phones, and our television only got one channel clearly. Still, I never felt bored. The fields, hills and woodlands around my home were the perfect playground whose
adventures were only limited by my imagination. I can remember once hiking to nearby lake and walking slowly around it. At the back of it I was amazed to find an old dirt road that I had never seen before. It was full of muddy tyre tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.
I walked on and on for what seemed like hours. I was sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ears “turn around and head back home”, but I was stubborn and walked on. There was still neither a car nor a house in sight. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared. I didn’t want to end up being trapped on this road, and I was worried that it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.
I continued to walk on with something growing inside of me. My heart was pounding and my legs were aching. I was almost in tears when I saw something in the distance. It was a house that I recognized. I jumped up and down and laughed out loud. It was still over a mile away, but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house in no time. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner. Then I ended my adventure with a good night’s sleep.
I often thought of that experience recently. Actually, in our life, all roads, no matter how they twist and turn, can lead us home again. They can lead us to our homes here on the earth. They can lead us to our homes in our hearts. May you always walk your path with love! May you always help your fellow travelers along the way! And may your roads always lead you home again! 28.Why did the author hardly feel bored when he was young?
A.He could have fun in nature. B.He had many friends to play with. C.He could watch TV all day. D.He used to explore the old dirt road 29.What does the underlined word “something” in Paragraph 3 probably refer to?
A.Hope. B.Courage. C.Doubt. D.Fear. 30.How did the author feel when he was exploring the dirt road?
A.He was worried to be trapped in the woods B.He was unconscious of danger ahead. C.He was contradictory in mind. D.He was afraid of being scolded by his parents. 31.What may be the best title for the passage?
A.Be Determined in Your Life. B.All Roads Lead Home. C.Every Effort Is Worthwhile. D.Be Brave to Adventure
D
Bats are the only mammals that can fly a great distance, but they have another ability. Many bats live a very long time for an animal of their size. European researchers are studying bats to understand why they live so long. They hope to make discoveries aimed at fighting the aging process in human beings.
Last week, the group of scientists said they had discovered important biological qualities in some bat species. The group studied bat chromosomes(染色体). The scientists were most interested in structures connected to the ends of the chromosomes. They are called telomeres(端粒),which shorten each time a cell divides. Scientists believe this shortening process causes cells to break down. They say this is what causes aging.
The European researchers studied 493 bats from four bat species. The group used information that
had been gathered over more than 60 years. Of these animals, the greater mouse-eared bat generally lived an average of 37 years. The scientists said it had telomeres that did not shorten with age. Another Myotis bat holds the record for oldest age, reaching 41 years. The scientists’ findings suggest that these bats’ cells have the ability to maintain and repair their telomeres. This, they said, helps guard against the aging process.
Based on its body size, a bat like the greater mouse-eared bat would be expected to live four years. But, these mammals have been found to live nearly 10 times longer than that. The scientists found that only 19 species of mammals live longer than humans when their body size is considered. Eighteen of these are bats. The only exception is an unusual African rat.
32. What decides bats’ aging process according to the text? .
A. The body size of the bat B. The type of chromosomes C. The building of cell D. The length of telomeres 33. How long does a greater mouse-eared bat generally live?
A. 19 years. B. 41 years. C. 37 years. D. 60 years. 34. We can learn from the text that _________ .
A. nineteen kinds of bats could live longer than humans B. the scientists have studied bats for more than six decades C. the bats studied in the research are of the same species D. researchers focus on finding out why humans live long 35. In which column of a magazine can you read the text?

Like most new fathers, Samuel Forrest was excited to meet his son, but he had no idea just how much that first meeting would change his life.
On 21 January, baby Leo was born with Down’s Syndrome(唐氏综合症).
“They took me in to see him and I looked at this guy and I said, he’s beautiful, he’s perfect and I’m absolutely keeping him.” Forrest told ABC News.
But Forrest’s wife did not share the same feelings. She reportedly gave Forrest a deadline, saying if the father wanted to keep the baby, she would divorce him.
Forrest, from Auckland, New ealand, said he was unaware that hospitals in Armenia “will tell you that you don’t have to keep babies with Down’s Syndrome.”

The new father has created a GoFundMe page called “Bring Leo Home” to collect money for the costly move.
“This really happened to me unexpectedly,” he told ABC news. “ I don’t have a lot. I have very little in fact.” The goal is to raise enough for a year so I can get a part-time job so Leo doesn’t have to be in daycare and I can help care for him.”
ABC News spoke to Leo’s mother Ruzan Badalyan who said that she did have a child with Down’s Syndrome and that she had left her husband. She declined to comment further.
The father’s GoFundMe page has already raised over $175,000 in just nine days. The page now states that additional funds will be given out to charity.
“We’d also like to share the extra money with the only orphanage in Armenia that regularly takes abandoned Down’s Syndrome babies as well as other organizations that can help these children,” it says.

What is your relationship like with your mobile phones? Do you use it for calls? Texts, social media, games, apps, internet or all of the above? I use my phone for work, pleasure, and socializing. It’s the first thing I pick up in the morning and the last thing I put down before I go to sleep. I even find it hard to put it face-down on the table while eating in fear someone “needs me”.
In recent years, mobile phones have become a popular part of our lives. In England in the year 2013, that number had jumped to 94 percent.
One reason why this may be the case is that, while in the past, technology was used on the environment it was built for---for example, TV for relaxing or computer in the office---mobile phones have bridged the gap, so we can relax, work or interact wherever and whenever we want.
B. To help the children with Down’s
No wonder so many of us see our mobile phones as an extension of ourselves and wouldn’t dare leave it at home.
While the number of mobile phone users has climbed, so has the number of people becoming addicted to technology. A study by researchers states, “significant mental and physical disorder, panic, confusion and extreme loneliness when forced to unplug from technology for an entire day.” One day of non-usage of technology produced systems similar to drug withdrawal. So why have so many of us been so seduced that we can’t stand being without technology?
Having thought about my own phone usage, I thought to myself, “What would actually happen if I didn’t use it? If I didn’t connect on social media, would I have the same “mental and physical disorder” as the students in the study?”
I think this would be a great learning experience to see exactly how much technology has affected our lives.
So, I decided I would do three days of no mobile or social media. How would I cope? 28. What is the main idea of the first paragraph? A. Mobile phones are used in many different ways. B. Mobile phones have become a part of our life. C. Mobile phones steal users’ too much time. D. Mobile phones have a bad effect on us. 29. Why does the author mention TV and computers? A. To remind us not to lose our mobile phones. B. To tell us TV is mainly used for relaxing.
C. To tell us computers are used as a tool in offices. D. To show the advantages of mobile phones.
30. What does the underlined word “seduced” mean in Paragraph 6? A. Addicted.
B. Surprised.
C. Impressed
D. Persuaded.
31. What will be discussed in the following paragraph? A. The great effects technology has on our daily lives. B. How to handle the situation without a mobile phone. C. The three-day experiences without a mobile phone. D. How to get rid of the addiction to mobile phones.

For over one hundred and fifty years, Americans of all social classes have worn blue jeans. 36 Whether they are worn for work or for fashion today, Strauss' invention continues to be popular not only among Americans but also among people around the world.

In 1873, Strauss received a letter from a Jewish tailor named Jacob Davis who had invented a process of connecting pockets with copper rivets(铆钉).This made the pants last a long time.Because Davis did not have the money to patent his idea, he offered to share it with Strauss if Strauss would agree to pay for the patent. 39 .

W Hi, Jack, have you thought about your ideal job in the future? Do you want to be an excellent math teacher like your father?
M For Gosh’s sake! I hate being a teacher. I still have a clear memory of the terrible days when my father helped me with all my subjects. But it is strange that I made great progress in my English learning. How about you, Jessica?
W Well, I dream of being a brilliant dancer like my mother. You know, she is 43 now, and she
has been dancing since she was 20 years old.
M I can’t believe it! She looks quite young and has a great figure.
W Yes. She has formed a good habit of having enough fruits and vegetables every day. And more importantly, she keeps an optimistic attitude towards life which benefits her physical condition. M Oh, I see. How I wish I had taken enough exercise.

W Hey, Mike. Where have you been? I didn’t see you around these days.

M Well, to tell you the truth, I am more than excited about my birthday, which will come in two days. And I am going to visit my parents-in-law with my wife. W Wow, sounds great.
M Definitely! This is my first time to spend my birthday with them. W Do they live far away from here?
M A little bit. We planned to take the train, but considering the travel peak, my wife strongly suggested that we go to the airport right after we finish our work this afternoon. How about you? What’s your plan for the holiday?
W Well, our situations are just the opposite. My parents-in-law will come to my house and they wish to stay at home and have a quiet Christmas Day. So I have to call my friends to cancel our party which will be held in my house.

W Come to my office, Billy. Look at your messy hair. This is the third time you have been late for class within this week. And every time you went in, you disturbed the teacher’s class. M Sorry, Miss. I didn’t mean to do that, but it was my alarm clock that didn’t wake me up. W That is not a proper excuse. You could set it ahead of the exact time so that you could have got up earlier and not have been late.
M I did that, but it seemed useless when I found the batteries had run out after I woke up this morning. I rushed to school and luckily, my neighbour Mr. Green gave me a hand and took me to school with his car.
W So you could have made it. But you were still late for class.
M The thing is, when I got off, I found I had left my bag in his car. And it was too late to
get it back when I realized that. I went straight to the nearest shop and gave him a call. I waited for five minutes before Mr. Green drove back.
W Finally, he gave you your bag and you came to the classroom and you were already 15minutes late for class at that time. Is that all?
M Miss, you seem to know the entire story. May I go back to class now? Otherwise I will be late for the following class. Text 9
W Help me decide on which type of hotel room to book. M I want the one with a bed.
W Very funny. We have a choice of different views, and each one is a different price. For instance, a room with a city view is 175 a night. M 175 a night?! That’s highway robbery!
W If you think that’s too steep, there are a few other options. We can get a courtyard room with no view for 120 a night or a room with an obstructed or peek-a-boo ocean views for 130 a night.
M I don’t really care which type of room we get as long as we don’t end up with a room on the ground floor. I don’t like having people walking back and forth outside my window all night. W Okay, I can request a room on an upper floor. You really don’t have a preference? M No, not really.
W There is a penthouse room for 400 a night.
M What?! For that price, I’d better get a view of the Eiffel Tower, the Parthenon, and the Great Wall of China! Text 10
W For millions of Americans, the most wonderful day of the year is December 25— Christmas. For one thing, it marks the end of the busy time of year. Many people need a rest after weeks of buying gifts, going to parties, organizing travel and getting their homes ready for the holiday. With all this, it is often said that Christmas has lost its meaning as the birthday of Jesus Christ. Some churches in the United States have called off Christmas Day services, so people can spend the day with their families. Another important part of the Christmas season is music. Among traditional carols, one of the most popular is “Silent Night”. But not all Americans celebrate Christmas. And even those who do might not celebrate it as a religious holiday. This is true of Christians as well as non-Christians. Still, they treat it as a special day.
And it is hard to think of anyone that Christmas is more special for than children. Of course, this has a lot to do with the tradition of a kindly old man with a big belly and a bright red suit. Children know Santa Claus as the one who leaves gifts under the tree on Christmas Eve.

I was delighted to receive a copy of Marie Curie and Her Daughters by Shelley Emling through my mailbox a few weeks ago.
Actually sci and formulae (公式).Of course I knew who Marie Curie was, her great achievements, her contribution to science, to medical advances and her influence on the world, but other than those, I really had very little idea about her life.
Shelley Emling has based this book on Marie Curie’s relationship with her two daughters, Irene and Eve. The book begins after the early death of Pierre Curie, when Marie is left to carry on the work that they started as a couple and to bring up her two small daughters alone. Emling has concentrated her book on the communication between Marie and her daughters. In her daighter's opinion, she was not an overly-protective mother, nor did she hesitate to spend time away from her daughters, yet this did not weaken their relationship. Marie was a caring and loving mother, who encouraged her daughters to become individuals, to achieve what they wanted to.
Marie Curie and her husband made the decision not to profit from their discoveries. It was because of this that Marie had to depend on donations to carry out her work, and that she had to carry out tours of the States.
I was very impressed by Emling’s writing style—she has told the story of three extraordinary women who were way ahead of their time in an interesting and very readable manner. 24. What is the writer good at?
A. Daydreaming. B. English and History. C. Physics and chemistry. D. Facts, figures and formulae. 25 . What is Marie Curie like in the eyes of Irene and Eve? A. She makes a pet of them like babies. B. She avoids staying away from them.
C. She encourages them to build their own characters. D. She wants to be involved in every area of their life. 26 Why did Marie Curie tour the States?
A. Because she meant to make herself a famous person.
B. Because she needed money to bring up her two small daughters by herself. C. Because she wished to introduce the medical advances to people in the U. S. D. Because she decided to continue her work without money made from discoveries. 27. What’s the focus of the book written by Shelley Emling? A. The connection between Marie Curie and her daughters. B. The contributions Marie Curie made to the world. C. The research work of Marie Curie and her husband. D. The decision made by Marie Curie and her husband.

Here is an astonishing and significant fact:Mental work alone can’t make us tired. It sounds absurd. But a few years ago, scientists tried to find out how long the human brain could labor without reaching a stage of fatigue (疲劳). To the amazement of these scientists, they discovered that blood passing through the brain, when it is active, shows no fatigue at all! If we took a drop of blood from a day laborer, we would find it full of fatigue toxins(毒素) and fatigue products. But if we took blood from the brain of an Albert Einstein,it would show no fatigue toxins at the end of the day.
So far as the brain is concerned,it can work as well and swiftly at the end of eight or even twelve hours of effort as at the beginning. The brain is totally tireless. So what makes us tired?
Some scientists declare that most of our fatigue comes from our mental and emotional(情感的) attitudes. One of England’s most outstanding scientists,J.A. Hadfield, says,“The greater part of the fatigue from which we suffer is of mental origin. In fact, fatigue of purely physical origin is rare.” Dr. Brill, a famous American scientist, goes even further. He declares, “One hundred percent of the fatigue of a sitting worker in good health is due to emotional problems.”
What kinds of emotions make sitting workers tired? Joy? Satisfaction? No! A feeling of being bored, anger, anxiety, tenseness, worry, a feeling of not being appreciated-those are the emotions that tire sitting workers. Hard work by itself seldom causes fatigue. We get tired because our emotions produce nervousness in the body. 28. What surprised the scientists a few years ago?
,
A. Fatigue toxins could hardly be found in a laborer’s blood. B. Albert Einstein didn’t feel worn out after a day’s work. C. A mental worker’s blood was filled with fatigue
D. The brain could work for many hours without fatigue toxins.
29. According to the author, which of the following can make sitting workers tired? A. Challenging mental work. C. Unpleasant emotions.
B. Endless tasks. D. Physical labor.
30. What’s the author’s attitude towards the scientists’ ideas? A. He doubts them
B. He agrees with them.. D. He hesitates to accept them.
C. He argues against them.
31. We can infer from the passage that in order to stay energetic, sitting workers need to ________.
A. have some good food C. enjoy their work
B. exercise regularly D. discover fatigue toxins D
When you’re out with a friend and take a photo of yourselves, do you know that you are also creating a work of art? Or that you are competing with Vincent van Gogh himself? Probably not. Your idea might be to show off your selfie(自拍照) on WeChat or QQ, but you probably don’t think of the Internet as a gallery or of yourself as an artist.
But the chief executive of London’s Saatchi Gallery, Nigel Hurst, thinks that the casual pictures we take of ourselves have something in common with self-portraits by the great masters. In support of the idea, the Saatchi Gallery has a new exhibition called From Selfie to Self-Expression.
The gallery is even encouraging visitors to add their own selfies to the show.
Hurst is perhaps not being 100 percent serious. He isn’t claiming that a snap you take of yourself in your favorite restaurant can be compared with a self-image painted by Van Gogh. But he does make a serious point. Once upon a time, it was only artists who could make images of themselves. They were the only ones, as Hurst told The Guardian, who “had the skills, materials and tools to create self-portraits.” Today, however, we “all have that [ability] through our smartphones.”
The popularity of the selfie rocketed after smartphones started to become widely used. In 2013, Oxford Dictionaries named “selfie” as its word of the year. As Pamela Rutledge, a professor at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology, told Vogue magazine “the cult (热潮)of the selfie celebrates regular people”.
32. What does the underlined word “features” in paragraph 3 most probably mean? A. informs B. shows C. sells D. misses 33. Nigel Hurst’s attitude to the smartphone selfie is_______. A. casual B. mixed C. favorable D. negative
34. Who shares opinions with Nigel Hurst? A. im ardashian B. Barack Obama C. David Cameron D. Pamela Rutledge
35. Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A. Selfies as Self-portraits B. Age of Smartphones C. Age of Selfie Artists D. Selfies of Celebrities

Good morning , ladies and gentlemen, Nowadays, a campaign called Clearing Your Plate has launched throughout our country. Clearing Your Plate means eating up all the food in your plate to save food and respect others’ labor. There are several reasons contributing to the launch of the campaign. Firstly, while dining out, we tend to order more food than we can consume, which causes waste and has aroused public
concern. Secondly, people in poverty-stricken areas suffer starvation, some of whom even die of hunger. If we save food, their sufferings can be relieved to some extent. Thirdly, people have realized saving food is a good virtue and can be beneficial to sustainable development of society as well. To make the campaign successful, we can do what we can to raise the awareness of clearing the plate. Also, we can suggest to our parents that we should follow the campaign. What’s more, we can monitor the performance of restaurants and hotels and so on.
Let’s join in the campaign to make efforts to build a resource-saving and environmental-friendly society.
That’s all, thank you!

Audrey hang,a fifth-grader from Levittown,N.Y,is the winner of this year’s Doodle 4 Google contest, rising to the top of some 100,000 entries on the theme of“draw one thing to make the world a better place.”
Her piece, titled“Back to Mother Nature,”describes a detailed water-cleaning machine.hang worked with a team of artists at Google to animate(使……生动)her drawing.
“To make the world a better place,I came up with a transformative water purifier, a machine used to remove dirty or harmful substances,”Google quoted hang as saying.“It takes in dirty and polluted water from rivers, lakes and even oceans, then massively transforms the water into clean, safe and pure water. When humans and animals drink this water, they will live a healthier life.”
She created a whole world around the device—one populated by humans, a whale in a top hat and dragons.
hang,s piece is“so vivid and so rich and so full and so complete,’’Google Doodle team leader Ryan Germick told the Washington Post.“Every leaf seemed to have life in it.”
Along with having her artwork featured on Google’s homepage, hang wins a $30,000 college scholarship. In addition, her school will receive a $50,000 Google for Education technology grant, and the company is donating $20,000 in her name to a charity devoted to bringing clean water to schools in Bangladesh.
On Sunday, the night before her work was revealed on net, hang told Newsday she was excited by the big win,but said she wouldn't be awake when her art first went online at midnight.
“I have school-tomorrow, so I can’t stay up late,”she told the paper. 25.What’s the passage mainly about?

The world’s richest man might seem to have it all,but Bill Gates has one regret. The self-made billionaire said he felt stupid for not knowing any foreign languages.
Speaking in his third Ask Me Anything question-and-answer session for online forum Reddit(红迪),the Microsoft founder said that he wished he spoke French,Arabic or Chinese.
He said:“I took Latin and Greek in high school and got A's and I guess it helps my vocabulary.I keep hoping to get time to study one of these—probably French because it is the easiest.I did Duolingo for a while but didn’t keep it up.”
Gates, who is worth $79.3 billion, praised Facebook founder Mark erberg for surprising an audience in Beijing when he spoke fluent Chinese.“Mark erberg amazingly leamed Chinese and did a Q&A with Chinese students—unbelievable, isn’t it?”he said.
This isn’t the first time for Gates to admit his regret over language. He also showed his habits at home and personal insights.

As he took the top spot on Forbes(福布斯)28th Annual Billionaires list last year for the fourth time,he said he is pretty basic when it comes to so ending on clothes and food, but that he enjoys investing in shoes and racquets(球拍)when he plays tennis.

We’ve been covering standing desks for a long time experts agree that sitting all day is killing us.We want to while also keeping our bodies healthy.Over the years, been several solutions to this from fixed standing desks to ones, portable desks to ones that change into shelves.
However, the most high tech and elegant solution has smart desk called The Stir inetic Desk. The desk learns behaviors and moves between a sitting and standing regularly throughout the day to keep you moving without your work flow.
You can program specific sitting and standing intervals or let the desk set the schedule. If you tend to sit while returning emails in the morning, but always want to stand during that afternoon conference call, the desk will learn those regular habits and adjust the schedule to fit them. Of course, the desk can always be manually lowered or raised by using the touch screen on the lower left comer of the desk.
When switching positions, the desk gently dips and rises to let you know that a change is coming up.If you’re not ready to switch positions at that time, you can tap the touchscreen to stay sitting or standing for a while longer.
The built.in touchscreen also keeps track of your daily sitting and standing times and tells you how many calories you’ve burned. You can even set goals for how long or often you want to stand. The desk also works with fitness devices like the FitBit to track your movements.
All of that smart tech doesn’t come cheap though. The M1 desk, which is the everyday model, runs a steep $2,990,while the more executive model with added features, the F1,goes for$4,190.
While expensive,it’s worth thinking of how much time we spend at our desks.Much like a good mattress(床垫),a good desk that works with you is worth the investment.Hopefully in a few years these smart, integrated desks will be more common and less expensive. 32.The Stir inetic Desk has been designed to_______.
A.help users with their work B.keep users moving all the time
C.get users to exercise while working D.remind users of their working schedule 33.Which is the feature of the touchscreen of the desk? A.It can tell users when to change positions. C.It can keep users in a fixed position.
B.It can track users’changes of positions.

34.Which of the following can best describe the desk? A.Productive but challenging. C.Complex and impractical.

35.What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?

The Netherlands on Monday introduced its first-ever \to help bring clown the high accident rate among elderly cyclists in the bicycle-mad country.
Developed for the government by the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) , the intelligent bicycle, runs on electricity.A commercial-available bicycle is expected to be on the market in the next two years and should sell for between 1, 700 to 200 euros per bicycle.

A generation of parents raised according to the permissive principles of postwar childcare experts is rediscovering the importance of saying \.They are beginning to reclaim the house as their own.Even spanking (打屁股) is back.
While today's parents do not want to return to the Victorian era (时代)—when children were seen, spanked, but not heard—there is a growing acknowledgement that the laissez-faire approach produced a generation of children running rings around puzzled parents struggling to restore order.
Janthea Brigden, a trainer with Parent Network, says \controlling things. What they want is to be able to discipline (管教) their children through teaching and encouraging.\
According to Steve Biddulph, the author of More Secrets of Happy Children, the permissive era was often just an excuse to ignore children. He believes discipline involves firm but friendly teaching and does not need to involve punishment. He teaches a method called \figure out what is wrong and how to get it right.Mr.Biddulph understands parents using spanking, but lie is against it.\.As children grow into their teens, more negotiation can take place, such as Prove you can be home safely by 1l pm, and we might let you stay out till midnight.\
\There is no good evidence that an occasional, properly administered spanking is harmful in any way.\.It is pure nonsense to believe that restricting children to their room as a punishment could make them have negative feelings about the room and cause sleep problems.
Mr.Rosemond tracks the overturning of traditional family values to the end of the Second World War.He blames the change of the American family into a child-centered, self-respect-oriented (以…为导向) unit on psychologists and social workers, who for 30 years have weakened traditional approaches.Previous generations of American parents raised children not by the book, but by self-evident truth, he says.Children should be seen and hot heard. If you make your bed, you'll have to lie in it.He says that those phrases contain time-honored understanding and principles that helped children to develop what we refer to as the \ parenting respect, responsibility and resourcefulness.

For people with thousands of pages to read, speed reading seems like a manna (甘露) from heaven. In addition, speed reading helps lighten the load of information you have to absorb since it provides a filter that you can use in screening all bits of information before you approach them.
71 Examining how much information you need will help you identify how you should read a certain document to maximize your learning and comprehension.Thorough reading may no longer be necessary in some cases, such as when you only need an outline of a certain document.
Another skill that can ease the burden of a.reader is the ability to read words in blocks.Make sure you do not spend too long on a certain block. 72 This will also make reading less tiresome and boring.
To master this important skill, you have to practice reading more and more words in a certain block at one time.A suggestion shared by some experts regarding this step is to increase the distance between you and the document you are reading. If you can read more and more words in one block, you can cut down on the time it usually takes you to read a certain text and you will be able to read more in a shorter period.
Readers should also practice reducing the number of times they go back to previous sections or
blocks.Using a pointer such as the tip of a pencil or pen can also help to make the flow of your reading smoother and faster. 73 Thus, your speed in reading will largely depend on the speed of the movement of your pointer.
If you still find yourself confused about the topic even after you have finished reading the document, do not re-read right away.Re-reading immediately will just lead to slower speed in reading. 74 Getting your own reading corner will also help.
75 Continue practicing and practicing the techniques aforementioned and soon, you'll achieve the reading speed that will work best for you.
A.In this technique, your eyes will follow the tip of the pointer. B.This saves time and reduces the effort that you have to make.
C.Taking a short break first is recommended before reading the material again. D.As a final note, the most.important point is consistent and deliberate practice. E.Your invaluable time can be saved if you can have your reading speed doubled.
F.The first step to increase your reading speed is to identify the specific information you need. G.Reducing the time you spend on a specific number of words in a block will make no difference. 第四部分:书面表达(共两节,35分) 第一节(15分)

In all the world’s cultures, people sing, play instruments, and celebrate with music. It plays such an important role in our lives that all fields focus on its study, including one looking at the biology of music. Experts find that because of the way our brains process music, learning to play an instrument or just listening to music can have a wide range of benefits.
Music education has received a lot of attention. Learning to play an instrument can help children improve math, science, and language skills. One study in Canada tracked children’s IQ scores for nine months, discovering that children who studied music had the biggest test score improvements. The secret may lie in the way reading music and playing notes use several areas of the brain, increasing our ability to learn school subjects. For example, reading notes improves spatial(空间的) reasoning skills, which are helpful in solving math problems like fractions(分数).
Music is also used for medical purposes, such as the treatment of diseases which affect memories. The secret lies in the way the brain processes music. One area near the forehead, the medical prefrontal cortex, connects music with memories stored in two other areas the amygdale and hippocampus. That’s why an old song can remind you of something that happened years ago. For patients suffering from diseases like Alzheimer’s, listening to music can help unlock buried memories by strengthening musical pathways to memories.
With the evidence of music’s benefits, it’s no wonder some countries make music study a part of their education system. People are recognizing that more than just a form of entertainment, music is also great for the brain.

It was the last time Susan Butcher ran the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in 1992. An hour into the race, Susan and her sled dog team sped down a hill and crashed into a fallen tree. Although hurt, Susan continued the difficult race.
The Iditarod Race started in 1925 when a doctor in Nome, Alaska was desperately in need of medicine to stop the spread of a deadly disease. Only a hospital had what he needed, but it was 700 mile-away! In January, it was too dangerous to send a boat and too stormy for his tiny airplane. The only hope was to use several sled dog teams following a trail, called the Iditarod Trail. They passed the medicine from one sled team to another. Wind and snow did not stop the men and their dogs. The medicine was delivered in record time. The race follows the route of the famous medicine run. Over 1,000 miles long, it is considered the toughest race in the world.
Susan Butcher was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In her teens Susan was given a Siberian husky dog and became very interested in huskies as sled dogs. After reading about the Iditarod Race, Susan moved to Alaska. She got several jobs to earn money to buy herself a sled and a team of huskies. After years of hard work and training, Susan achieved her dream of racing on the Iditarod Trail.
In 1978, at the age of 24, Susan entered the race for the first time and became the first woman to finish in the top 20. In 1982 she came in second. In 1984 she was leading her team across a frozen waterway when they fell into the water. Her lead dog managed to pull Susan and the other dogs out of danger. Remarkably, she came in second.
In her fourth race, in 1985,a starving moose(驼鹿) attacked her dogs, killing two and injuring eleven. Susan had to leave the race. In 1986 Susan joined the race again. This time, she won. She won again in 1987. In 1988 she became the first person ever to win three Iditarod races in a row. Unbelievably, Susan won for the fourth time in 1990.

Chicken soup has long been a comfort food for people with cold symptoms. Whether the remedy(疗法) comes from the warmth and comfort of the soup or from actual cold-fighting ingredients(成分) in the meal, it is still up for debate.
Chicken Soup Just the Evidence
Science has begun to support what mothers have understood for centuries. The heat, salt, and hydration provided by chicken soup may actually fight the cold virus. Laboratory studies have shown that ingredients of chicken soup with vegetables could kill viral cells and prevent the growth of new ones. The soup may also provide an anti-inflammatory(消炎的) effect that helps reduce cold symptoms. Unfortunately, the benefits
of chicken soup appear to be limited by how quickly the soup leaves the body. There is no indication that chicken soup would help in the prevention of colds, but its use as a remedy for symptoms is common. It is largely a safe remedy with no ill side effects, and scientific evidence points more in favor of its cold-fighting properties(特性) than against it. The Downside of Chicken Soup
Evidence in support of chicken soup’s antiviral properties is not yet solid enough to prove true, reliable medicinal effects. Although the evidence based on personal experiences and existing research seem to support a good effect of chicken soup, a clinical trial would be very difficult to perform. In addition, some people with food allergies(过敏性反应) or sensitivities to salt may experience ill side effects from chicken soup. Unbroken bones may also lead to a chocking risk, particularly for children. However, the potential benefits of chicken soup seem to far outweigh the possible risks.
13. What does the underlined sentence suggest?
A. Mothers have long been helped by scientists to find remedies for colds. B. Scientists have agreed for centuries with what mothers have understood. C. People have tried chicken soup to help reduce cold symptoms since long ago. D. Mothers know better how to deal with cold symptoms than scientists. 14. Which of the following is true about chicken soup?
A. It is particularly good for children. B. It can prevent people from colds.
C. It is an amazing comfort food for people with colds. D. It surely has medicinal effects on colds. 15. What’s the author’s opinion on chicken soup?
A. It is good for people with colds to have chicken soup.
B. Scientists have found solid evidence about the benefits of chicken soup. C. Chicken soup can take the place of other medicines for colds. D. People still argue whether chicken soup has effects on cold symptoms. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

Recently, there has been a heated discussion online about a female driver in Chengdu, who was violently beaten because of her rude driving. In my opinion, both beating others and impolite driving are quite bad behaviors.
China is a civilized country with a long history. Our ancestors attached great importance to “Li”---civilized behavior. Every Chinese should obey discipline and behave well.
As middle school students, we should be strict with ourselves in manners. Firstly, we ought to respect the old and care the young. Besides, we should behave ourselves, such as civilizedly dinning, waiting in line on many occasions and so on. Last but not least, we must obey school and society discipline, not cheating in exams.
As far as I am concerned, only when we all behave well, can our society be harmonious.

A new generation addiction is quickly spreading all over the world. Weboholism(瘾), a twentieth century disease, affects people from different ages. They surf the net, use e-mail and speak in chat rooms. They spend many hours on the computer, and it becomes a compulsive habit. They cannot stop, and it affects their lives.
Ten years ago, no one thought that using computers could become compulsive behavior that could affect the social and physical life of computer users. Such behavior has seriously affected teenagers and college students. They are likely to log(写日志) on computers and spend long hours at different websites.
They become hooked(着迷) on computers and gradually their social and school life is affected by this situation. They spend all free time surfing and don’t concentrate on homework, so this addiction influences
their grades and success at school. Because they can find everything on the websites, they hang out there. Moreover, this addiction to websites influences their social life.
They spend more time in front of computers than with their friends. The relation with their friends changes. The virtual life becomes more important than their real life. They have a new language that they speak in the chat rooms and it causes cultural changes in society.
Because of the change in their behavior, they begin to isolate themselves from society and live with their virtual(虚拟的) friends. They share their emotions and feelings with friends who they have never met in their life. Although they feel confident on the computer, they are not confident with real life friends they have known all their life. It is a problem for the future. This addictive behavior is beginning to affect all the world. 21.The main idea of the passage is about__________.

From self-driving cars to carebots(护理机器人) for elderly people, rapid development in technology has long represented a possible threat to many jobs normally performed by people. But experts now believe that almost 50 percent of occupations existing today will be completely unnecessary by 2025 as artificial(人工的) intelligence continues to change businesses.
“The next fifteen years will see a revolution in how we work, and a revolution will necessarily take place in how we plan and think about workplaces, ” said Peter Andrew, Director of Workplace Strategy for CBRE Asia PACIFIC.
A growing number of jobs in the future will require creative intelligence, social skills and the ability to use artificial intelligence.
The report is based on interviews with 200 experts, business leaders and young people from Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. It shows that in the US technology already destroys more jobs than it creates.
But the report states, “Losing occupations does not necessarily mean losing jobs – just changing what people do.” Growth in new jobs could occur as much, according to the research.
“The growth of 20 to 40 companies that have the speed and technological know-how will directly challenge big companies,” it states.
A 2014 report by Pew Research found 52 percent of experts in artificial intelligence and robotics were optimistic about the future and believed there would still be enough jobs in the next few years. The
optimists pictured “ a future in which robots do not take the place of more jobs than they create,” according to Aaron Smith, the report’s co-author.
“Technology will continue to affect jobs but more jobs seem likely to be created. Although there have always been unemployed people, when we reached a few billion people there billions of jobs. There is no shortage of things that need to be done and that will not change,” Microsoft’s Jonathan Grudin told researchers.
24. We can infer from the text that in the future______. A. people will face many difficulties B. peoplewill take up more creative jobs
C. artificial intelligence will threaten people’s lives D. most jobs will be done in traditional workplaces 25. According to the article, ________ A. people won’t necessarily lose jobs B. big companies will face fewer challenges C. small companies will win against big companies D. most people will become interested in technology
26. What is the attitude of most experts in artificial intelligence and robotics to the future? A. Mixed. B. Worried. C. Hopeful. D. Doubtful.
27. Jonathan Grudin’s words in the last paragraph suggest that _______. A. there will be enough jobs for people B. things will change a lot in a few years C. many people will become unemployed D. technology will totally change future jobs

Feeling tired? Under too much stress? Well, you may want to try Yoga(瑜珈). It’s what more and more people have been turning to to release the trouble of modern life. Practically unheard of in the West until 50 years ago, Yoga has become one of the most popular health trends around the world, including China. If you search for Yoga on line in Chinese, lots of pages are there to see, most of which are main pages of Yoga clubs. In order to keep fit and lose weight, many girls spend more than 1000 yuan taking part in Yoga classes every month.
However, are you really ready for it? There are several things you need to know before you really take it. First, do not force your body too much. Yoga has many difficult poses. They are beautiful and worth boasting if you could finish them. But if you force yourself to do as exactly as an experienced Yoga teacher does, you may hurt your body, instead of strengthening it. Do you remember you original purpose for playing Yoga? It is self -building, not competing.
Second, do some research about the Yoga class that you are to register. Yoga is new in China and there are not so many certificated well-trained Yoga teachers. Some not well organized clubs just find someone learn a little Yoga and certificate them. But be aware, a non-eligible teacher might wrongly guide you and you could not benefit from the classes much except that they force you to exercise your body a bit. Considering about the large amount of money you invest in it, it’s worth and reasonable to make sure the teachers in the club are qualified before you join.
Third, it would be better to learn something about nutrition when you practice Yoga. In the very beginning, Yoga was part of the Vedas, bible of the traditional Indian philosophy. So it could be regarded as
a kind of lifestyle. When you have decided to care for your body, why not feed it properly? In fact, good clubs have their own nutritionists.
Anyhow, make sure you are ready before you act. The fashion may change quickly. But what benefits is still good for us.
28.The author’s main purpose in writing the passage is to .

The scientific world continues to be amazed by the speed of the development of cloning. Some scientists
now suggest that the cloning of humans could occur in the near future. Despite the benefits of cloning, however, certain ethical (道德的) questions concerning the possible abuse (滥用) of cloning have been raised. At the heart of these questions is the idea of humans influencing life in a way that could harm society, either morally or in a real physical sense. Some people object to cloning because it allows scientists to \God\
The cloning of Dolly raised the debate over this practice to a whole new level. It has become obvious that the technology for cloning Dolly could also be used to clone humans. A person could choose to make two or ten or a hundred copies of himself or herself by the same techniques used with Dolly. An active debate about the morality(道德) of cloning humans arises. Some people see benefits from the practice, such as providing a way for parents to produce a new child to replace one dying of a fatal disease. Other people worry about humans taking into their own hands the future of the human race.
At the beginning of the twenty-first century, many scientists say the controversy over the ethics of cloning humans is overstressed because of the unpredictability of cloning in general. While scientists have cloned animals such as sheep, mice, cows, pigs, and goats, fewer than 3 percent of all those cloning
efforts have succeeded. The animal clones that have been produced often have health problems. Scientists believe the rapid reprogramming in cloning can introduce random (任意的) errors into a clone’s DNA. Those errors have altered individual genes in minor ways, and the genetic defects (缺陷) have led to the development of major medical problems. Some scientists say this should make human cloning out of the question, but others argue that cloning humans may actually be easier and safer than cloning animals. Whatever, I agree that further research in the field of cloning is needed. 32. Some people are against cloning of humans because they think _________. A. the practice takes too much time and money B. the cloning technology is still not mature C. humans control the future of the human race D. the population in the world will be too large
33. Some scientists think the debate over ethics of cloning humans is overstressed because _______. A. cloning of human beings is completely impossible B. the result of cloning can’t be predicted in general C. cloning of animals is a failure D. there are big errors in a clone’s DNA 34. We can learn from the text that _______. A. cloning of humans is a very controversary issue
B. the cloning of Dolly begins to raise the debate over cloning of humans C. there are medical problems in cloning animals D. cloning humans is easier and safer than cloning animals 35. The text is mainly about _______.
A. the benefits of cloning B. the ethics of cloning C. the history of cloning D. the defects of cloning 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

For college graduates, it is of vital importance to write application letters well. 36 It should state clearly the job you want, and should tell what you have done. It should be simple, human, personal and brief without leaving out any necessary facts.
In writing a letter of application, keep in mind that the things a possible employer is most likely to want to know about are your qualifications, your achievements and your aims. 37 If the first few sentences fail to win the reader’s attention, the rest of the letter may not be continued at all. Try to key your opening remarks to the needs or interests of the employer not to your own needs or desires. For example, instead of beginning with “ I saw your advertisement in today’s newspaper” you might say “ I have made a careful study of your advertising during the past six months” or I have made a survey in my neighborhood to find out how many housewives use your product and why they like it.”
38 Be clear about the kind of job for which you are now applying. College graduates looking for their first positions often ask what they can provide in a letter and what if employers want experience, which, naturally, no beginner has. 39
It is important to write a good strong closing for your letter. Make a specific request for an interview or give the possible employer something definite to do or expect. 40 That makes it easier for a possible employer to get in touch in you.
A. Here are a few suggestions for you to prepare yourself better for your interview. B. An excellent idea is to enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope with your letter. C. The answer is that everything you have ever done is experience. D. Don’t be afraid of being a new hand. E. Try to avoid writing in general.
F. The purpose of a letter of application is to help you to “sell” yourself. G. The opening paragraph is perhaps the most important.

Recently, the air quality in China has raised a widespread concern. As is indicated in the
picture,an old man and his grandson are taking a walk in the street with masks covering their mouths. As the haze is becoming heavier and heavier, they find it hard to see the buildings and trees around them clearly.
The picture conveyed here is that air pollution is quite severe in China. Many factors account for this phenomenon. In the first place, vehicles sending large quantities of poisonous gases are a major source of air pollution.Furthermore, factories that release a great deal of smoke are also responsible for the poor air
quality.Besides, burning materials like coal or oil for homes and offices is another major contributor to air pollution.
Personally,to better the air quality, the government and the common citizens should make joint
efforts.Riding and walking are wise options for public travels.Meanwhile, effective laws are supposed to be made to guarantee good air quality.
