Wuthering Heights
“My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods: time will change it, I’m well ware, as winter changes the trees. My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a soured lf little visible delight, but necessary.”----Said by Catherine.
“I forgive what you have done to me. I love my murderer---but yours! How can I?”---Said by Heathcliff.
I like the two excellent sentences above very much. There were full of love in what they said. Many people are moved by the love between them, and I am not the exception.
Before expressing my opinion on the novel, I want to have a brief
introduction about the author---Emily Bronte. Emily Bronte was the daughter of a vicar, and their home was a stone-built church house standing alone on the edge of some of the wildest of the Yorkshire moors. There were five daughters and one son in the family, however, the only son died when he was 31 years old. In the year of 1947 Emily, Charlotte and Anne Bronte separately published their own novels Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre and Agnes Grey. Jane Eyre was a great success, however, the Wuthering Heights could not be understood and accepted by people at that time. The genius author Emily died only one year after the publishing. She did not have the chance to know that so many people love Wuthering Heights now and it has become one of the world masterpieces. In fact that the Bronte sisters all died very early, Emily died when she was 30, Charlotte, 38 and Anne, 29. If they have lived longer, what would happen to the world of literature, no one will know. Their deaths were a great loss to the world of literature.
Love and revenge were two things all through the Wuthering
Heights. The two most important characters in the novel were Catherine and Heathcliff who was adopted by Mr Earnshaw, Catherine’s father. Catherine and Heathcliff loved each other deeply. Frankly speaking, I do not like Catherine very much partly because she was proud and wild, partly because though she loved Heathcliff deeply and she even said “I am Heathcliff”, she betrayed Heathcliff and decided to marry to Edgar Liton when the love between her and Heathcliff was faced with blocks from society. She gave in to the society. Heathcliff was deeply hurt when Catherine said that “It would degrade me to marry Heathcliff now, so he left with full of revenge. Catherine married to Edgar, though she did not really love him. I think it ridiculous that Catherine thought that if she married Edgar, she could aid Heathcliff to rise, and place him out of her brother’s power.” She was kidding herself. Her betrayal to Heathcliff caused the tragedy and at last she paid heavy costs. In my opinion Catherine should have to insist on her love for Heathclill and never give in to the society.
To Heathcliff, I show my pity, respect and disgust. I show my pity
for him because I think his life was full of suffering. He was badly treated by Catherine’s brother, Hindley Earnshaw. He made Heathcliff a servant and a wild, rough-mannered person without knowledge. However, Heathcliff could bare all this because he loved Catherine and he also known that Catherine loved him. Tragedy began when Catherine betrayed him. He left the Wuthering Heights. He started his revenge the moment he came back with a lot of money. He had the ability to do the things he liked. Then he was even more painful than before after he had succeed in vengeance. That is why I show pity to him.
Then why I show my respect to him? It is because I was moved by
his permanent and unchangeable love for Catherine. He never gave in. Though Catherine betrayed him, he forgave her. He said“I forgive what you have done to me. I love my murderer---but yours! How can I?” what a love it is? To Heathcliff, Catherine was like a murder, however, he did everything for his murder. He never changed his love. How strong the love was!
I think people who read Wuthering Heights can fail to be
impressed by the way Heathcliff have his revenge. He hated everybody and everything except Catherine. His wife, his son and Hindley Earnshaw, Hareton Earnshaw, Edgar Linton, and Catherine Linton all suffered a lot because of him. He was wild and horrible. I can not believe that he put his hatred to his own son, and he even did not care the death of his son. That’s the reason I show my disgust.
As we all known that at the end of the novel Heathcliff died, and I
think that was the best way for him to free himself. After all he had done a lot of bad things. He joined Catherine in the grave. It is wild love. It was the sincere and strong love that changed Heathcliff and he gave up his revenge. Catherine Linton and Hareton Earnshaw lasted the love between he and Catherine Earnshaw. The love lasted forever!
Above is my personal opinion. Wuthering Heights is really well
worthy reading. You can appreciate the beautiful language wrote by Emily Bronte, and you can also see the strength and the true meaning of love.
