(2018·河南省六市高三第一次联考)If there was one thing you could make parents understand about kids, what would it be? That is one of the questions TFK and Kids-Health. org recently asked in an anonymous (匿名的) survey conducted online. More than 8,000 kids answered. “We just want to spend time with you,” said a 12-year-old. “At 13, you can't treat me like I'm 6,” another kid said. An 11-year-old wrote, “Being a kid is a lot harder than it looks.” The kids who took our survey made it clear that they want to feel close to the important people in their life — their mom, dad and other caring adults. But their answers also show that it is not always easy to deal with these close relationships.
Many kids — two out of three — said they get along pretty well or very well with their parents. About four out of five kids told us that they have fun with their parents. But that doesn't mean they never disagree. In fact, most kids reported arguing with their parents, at least sometimes. “It's absolutely normal to disagree and argue,” says D'Arcy Lyness, a child psychologist. “But it's also important to learn how to do so respectfully.” About half of the kids said they are doing that. When they disagree with their parents, they say they discuss issues calmly.
But two out of five kids said arguments tend to involve yelling (喊叫) at each other. Lyness points out that shouting never helps. “Speak up, and let your parents know your ideas and your opinions,” she advises. “But be patient. Don't use a raised, angry voice.”
Kids made it clear that they would rather avoid conflict altogether. Not surprisingly, three out of four kids admitted to lying at times. Many said they lied to avoid getting in trouble or disappointing their parents. According to Lyness, lying isn't just wrong. It can actually get negative results. Telling the truth builds trust. “When parents can trust you, they are more likely to give you more freedom and more privileges,” she says.

(2018·郑州市高三质量预测)At 23, my career got going. I was midway through a master's degree at the London School of Economics and Political Science and had been hired as a part-time reporter for a finance website. I got a great one-month review and my
boss asked if I was interested in staying at the company after graduation.
However, balancing graduate studies with work was challenging. To deal with it, I checked my real self at my office door. I came in to work, greeted my colleagues and listened more than I contributed in each morning meeting. The small team I worked with often seemed busy, so rather than giving ideas that might get turned down, I stayed back.
After four months, my boss called me into his office. The meeting was going well until he told me that despite the great work I had produced, the team had held a meeting and decided, “We don't think it's the right fit.”
I must have looked confused. “You're ambitious, intelligent and will be very successful,” my boss said. “But you haven't made enough effort to join the team. You lost the enthusiasm you showed in your interview. That won't work long term, and if I could give you one piece of advice, it would be to get your guard down.” I couldn't believe that performing well at my job wasn't enough to keep it. But I knew my boss was right. They knew that when they hired me, I had no experience in finance reporting, yet they took a chance on me. In meetings I usually contributed last, after I had heard everyone else's suggestions. I did it to show that I was a listener, but also to hide my fears. They liked the person who walked into the interview, and they didn't respect me when I hid that person from them.
“Don't leave before you leave.” That advice is essential for women at all stages of our careers. Because we work so hard for success, we don't like to think that we hurt ourselves sometimes. But each of us must change when necessary. In trying to earn a full-time job, I “leaned back” in order not to show too much of myself or my lack of expertise (专门知识). I learned that the hard way wasn't the way to achieve our goals.
5.Why was the author offered a job at the company at first? A.Because she just got her master's degree in finance. B.Because she greatly impressed her boss in her first month. C.Because she had quite a lot of experience in finance reporting. D.Because she showed her special financial talent while working there.
解析:选B 细节理解题。根据第一段第三句“I got a great one-month review and my boss asked if I was interested in staying at the company after graduation.”可知,在第一个
月的工作中,“我”获得了很高的评价,给老板留下了深刻的印象,故老板决定聘用“我”。故B项正确。
6.During her next four months at the company, the author ________. A.performed well enough to earn the team's respect B.didn't balance her graduate studies with work very well C.was a good listener and contributed a lot in the meetings D.was afraid to offer her ideas because of her lack of confidence
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第二段第四句“The small team I worked with often seemed busy, so rather than giving ideas that might get turned down, I stayed back.”,并结合第四段倒数第二句“I did it to show that I was a listener, but also to hide my fears.”可知,“我”工作所在的团队常常看起来很忙碌,“我”担心自己的建议或想法遭到拒绝,所以只愿做一个倾听者。据此可知,由于缺乏自信,“我”害怕表达自己的想法,故D项正确。
7.What does the author intend to tell us in the passage? A.We should always keep up our enthusiasm at work.
B.Expertise and experience are greatly valued in the workplace.
C.We should not shy away from sharing our ideas when working in a team.

(2018·陕西省高三教学质量检测)Career success could be predicted as early as kindergarten, according to a 20-year study recently published in the American journal Public Health.
Researchers from Pennsylvania State University and Duke University tracked more than 700 children from across the US between kindergarten and age 25 and found a significant correlation (关联) between their social skills as kindergarteners and their success as adults two decades later.
In the research, teachers assessed how the kindergarteners interacted with each other socially using a range of criteria like whether they cooperate with their peers without prompting, whether they're helpful to others, whether they're good at understanding feelings, and whether they can solve problems on their own.
Researchers then kept track of whether the students go on to graduate from high school on time, get a college degree, and find and keep a full-time job by 25. They also monitored
the participants' involvement with crime, drug abuse, public assistance, and mental health issues.
The results showed that socially capable children are far more likely to earn a college degree and have a full-time job by 25 than those with limited social skills. Those with limited social skills also have a higher chance of getting arrested, binge drinking, and applying for public housing.
“This study shows that helping children develop social and emotional skills is one of the most important things we can do to prepare them for a healthy future,” said Kristin Schubert, program director at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which funded the research, in a release. “From an early age, these skills can determine whether a child goes to college or prison, and whether they end up employed or addicted.”
The good news, according to Damon Jones, lead author of the study, is that intervention (干预) at a young age can help improve social and emotional skills.
“This research by itself doesn't prove that higher social competence can lead to better outcomes later on,” he said. “But when combined with other research, it is clear that helping children develop these skills increases their chances of success in school, work, and life.”

9.What's Paragraph 2 and 3 mainly about? A.When the researchers began their study. B.How long it took to complete the study. C.How the researchers conducted the study. D.What factors were studied by the researchers.
解析:选C 段落大意题。第二段和第三段主要介绍了研究者是如何进行这项研究的。故选C。
10.What should parents do to help their children to succeed according to Kristin Schubert?
A.Teach them how to cooperate with others. B.Teach them some basic living skills. C.Tell them to keep off alcohol. D.Coach them in their lessons.

(2018·福建省普通高中毕业班质量检查)The English have a difficult and, generally speaking, dysfunctional (反常的) relationship with clothes. Their main problem is that they have a desperate need for rules, and are unable to get along without them. This helps to explain why they have an international reputation for dressing in general very badly, but with specific areas of excellence, such as high-class men's suits, ceremonial costumes, and innovative (革新的) street fashion. In other words, we English dress best when we are “in uniform”.
You may be surprised that I am including “innovative street fashion” in the category of the uniform. Surely the parrot-haired punks (朋克摇滚乐迷) or the Victorian vampire goths are being original, not following rules? It's true that they all look different and eccentric (古怪的) but in fact they all look eccentric exactly in the same way. They are wearing a uniform. The only truly eccentric dresser in this country is the Queen, who pays no attention to fashion and continues to wear what she likes, a kind of 1950s fashion, with no regard for anyone else's opinion. However, it is true that the styles invented by young English people are much more eccentric than any other nation's street fashion. We may not be individually eccentric, apart from the Queen, but we have a sort of collective eccentricity, and we appreciate originality in dress even if we do not individually have it.
Another “rule” of behavior I had discovered was that it is very important for the English not to take themselves too seriously, to be able to laugh at themselves. However, it is well known that most teenagers tend to take themselves a bit too seriously.
The goths, in their scary black costumes, certainly look as if they are taking themselves seriously. But when I got into conversation with them, I discovered that they too had a sense of humor. I was once chatting to a goth in the full vampire costume — with a white face, deep purple lipstick, and black parrot-hair. I saw he was also wearing a T-shirt with “Goth”. “Why are you wearing that?” I asked. “In case you don't realize I'm a goth,” he answered, pretending to be serious. We both burst out laughing.
语篇解读:本文主要讲述了英国人是如何着装的。 12.What can we know about the English people? A.They need rules to dress well. B.They are in need of uniforms. C.They are creative in general. D.They lead the world trend.

We try our best to help those who are in need or make our hometown a lot of more beautiful. We find greatly pleasure in these activities.

(2018·四川省绵阳市高三第二次诊断性考试)While money can't technically buy happiness, it can buy you a mood-lifting, outlook-improving vacation. Haven't made plans yet to skip town this winter? These money-saving travel tips can help you book the destination of your choice and enjoy your time there — without breaking the bank.
1.FLY THE COOP FAST
If you're planning to set off for an adventure right away, try the GTFO (Get The Flight Out) app. It lists the cheapest round-trip flights departing from your local airport that day or by the next morning. At press time, airfare was down 12 percent from last August and round-trip tickets for domestic flights averaged $218.
2.SNAG A DISCOUNTED HOTEL ROOM
If Airbnb isn't your style, reserve marked-down accommodations on Tingo, which lists almost all the rooms in more than 155,000 locations worldwide. After you book a price drop room, the site monitors rates until, typically, 24 to 48 hours before check-in. If the price drops, Tingo refunds you the difference.
3.LIVE IT UP LOCALLY
If you're planning a staycation (不出城度假) this winter, try an affordable escape close to home. The free app HotelTonight offers lodging (租住) deals in more than 100 U.S. and Canadian cities and regions, and has a location-based feature that gives extra savings on already discounted prices on spots closest to you. Same-day prices fall even lower after 6 P.M.

I wanted to have tea with Nirad in a tea break during a retreat (静养). I was holding the cup so he could sip (小口喝) tea. I was being careful and poured a small quantity in his mouth. I enjoyed concentrating on each moment and listening deeply to do a good job with serving tea.
We were immediately connected and befriended each other during this time. Two other retreat participants joined and then there were four us people talking about varieties of topics which ranged from how Nirad progressed in his education to cool ones like how he maintains his weight, etc. These conversations brought smiles and it seemed we all knew each other from long time ago. In subtle (巧妙的) ways, we quietly felt the connection.
When we finished tea, I felt like tying a wrist thread for Nirad. The wristband had the letters that read “WE” on one side and “ME” on the other if read upside down. This beautiful gift was received from the Moved By Love team (a non-profit volunteer organization in India). I told Nirad that my youngest brother is about his age, and he gave me a sweet, calm smile.
I felt deep content during this teatime. I had actually lived those moments, being sympathetic and friendly. It was an experience of joy. Later, during the retreat, each time myself and Nirad happened to greet or talk, we smiled naturally and felt connected.
It's sad that we don't connect deeply, even with our family or friends. We are just too busy running after things, going nowhere. We don't seem to concentrate or care enough for people during our conversations. I had these valuable realisations later.
On the last day of the retreat, I told Nirad, “This was the best teatime I ever had in my life.” He gave me a warm, unforgettable smile.

6.How did the author find the teatime with Nirad? A.Calm. C.Boring.
B.Sad. D.Happy.

the South American sun, Cateura is a long way from the conservatories of Prague or Vienna. Yet the township, which grew out of Paraguay's largest dump (垃圾场), is gaining a reputation as a hothouse for musical talent — and for its youth orchestra (管弦乐队) that plays instruments made from garbage. “The world sends us garbage. We send back music,” says Favio Chavez, leader of the “Recycled Orchestra”, during a recent visit by the group to Los Angeles. Orchestra members, poor children from Cateura, play violins fashioned from oven trays and guitars made from dessert dishes. The orchestra provides the youngsters an outlet and an escape, a chance to go beyond the mess of their slum (贫民窟) through the music of Mozart, and even Sinatra. “In the beginning, it was difficult to play,” says the 10-year-old violinist Celeste Fleitas. “But Favio helped me learn over time. From Favio, I have learned to be more responsible and value the things I have.”
The destination for more than 1,500 tons of waste each day, the community has no safe drinking water and little access to electricity or sanitation (卫生设施). Illiteracy is severe, and the children of the township often fall into drugs, violence and crimes.
Favio Chavez, a musical talent, came to Cateura as an environmental technician in 2006 and started a youth music school. He knew shop-bought instruments were beyond the means of villagers whose sheds are worth less than a violin, so he approached a carpenter to make some out of waste from the dump.
The orchestra caught the eye of Paraguayan filmmaker Alejandra Amarilla. She uploaded a short piece of the orchestra to YouTube in 2012, hoping to secure crowdfunding (众筹融资) for what would become Landfill Harmonic, a documentary released across the United States this month and promoting the youngsters on a tour of the world's music halls later on.

(2018·合肥市高三第一次教学质量检测)Half off usually unaffordable products? Only $49.99 for that $100.00 dinner? That's the magic of Groupon, but for some small business owners the “great business” offered by Groupon can be equal to the kiss of death. How could that occur?
The math of Groupon seems simple at a glance, but upon further inspection the numbers don't add up when it comes to smaller businesses. A Groupon deal typically offers a 50% discount on a product or service, and then the remaining profit is divided between Groupon and the small business. While Groupon has already received the profit in advance, the merchant is left waiting for their cut. Those worrying numbers are assuming the price cut is 50/50, which, in some cases, is being generous.
When you break it down to numbers, a Groupon deal seems disastrous, but it's not only the numbers small business owners have to worry about. The point of Groupon deals is to attract new and hopefully long-term customers. Yet, does this actually happen? The majority of consumers buying the Groupon are there for the bargain and don't return after using their Groupon. CFHS Junior Angelita Pope stated, “I love the deals offered by Groupon!
