Advanced Knowledge Technologies is recognised as a leading research programme conducted at some of the foremost informatics departments in Britain. It is also a training ground for a new generation of researchers. To highlight the work of these students, a

Inthispaper,westartbydescribingthearchitectureoftheAWBandthen

discussthefactorsthatin uencedtheapplication’sdesign.Initially,wenever

foresawtheneedforusingrulebasedreasoning–weassumedthatontological

basedreasoningalonewouldbeadequate–however,asourworkprogressedit

becameapparentthatderivingnewinformationthroughrulesisanextremely

importantandpowerfulasset.Forthiswedescribeouruseofthecurrentpro-

posaloftheSemanticWebRuleLanguage2(SWRL)toexpresstheselogicbased

derivationrules.Wethendemonstratehowremappingtheserulesintoanother

formallowstheirapplicationtoourdataset.

Tofacilitatethis,wearguefortheimportanceofnotonlymakingavailable

semanticconstraintinformation[2]butalsotheabilitytoexpressthisinafully

quanti edandnaturalmanner.BuildingonourpreviousworkwithourCon-

straintInterchangeFormat(CIF)[4]wedemonstratehowthiscanbeachieved

usingCIF/SWRL3,anextensionofSWRLwithourRDFcompatibleencoding

ofCIF[5].Derivationrulesandconstraintsbelongingtothedatacanbecon-

siderednotonlyasimportantdescriptorsofthatdatabutalsoasindicatorsof

howtouseorvalidatethedata.

Weconcludewithadiscussionofour ndingsandcommentonthedirection

ofourfuturework.
