Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30minutes to write a short essay about “Character

Amnesia” based on the picture below. You should start your essay with a brief account of

the impact of the widespread use of computers on the way people write and then explain whether it is necessary to restrict typing. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.

As is known to us all,with the popularization of computer technology,

handwriting is gradually being

replaced by keyboard input,giving rise to the

phenomenon of “character amnesia” depicted in the picture: the man forgets how to write a word with a pen.

To

address this problem,the possible solution is that the

use of typewriting should be properly restricted while handwriting should be vigorously encouraged.

? There are many reasons accounting for its

significance,but they may come down to the following threemajor ones.To begin with,typewriting

leads to the decline of people’s handwriting abilities. It is reported that a college student failed his interview due to his flawed resume which was full of wrongly written

characters.What’s more,Chinese characters embody the essence of Chinese culture.Therefore, handwriting practice should be promoted to keep our cultural heritage. Most important of all, a lot of office work involves typewriting on computers. Thus the move to impose a complete ban on typewriting would go against the trend of technology. ? By and large, I am convinced thatalthough it is more convenient to typewrite on computers than write by hand,

typewriting is an inevitable trend while handwriting is a necessity.Only by doing so

can we both remain current with the modern technology and inherit the beautiful handwriting of the traditional Chinese culture.
