When I first started working in the hospital, I started out as a nursing aide because I didn’t have license. My job is to assist a nurse in tasks that require little training. I worked the night shift, so I could earn more money because I had a girl to support. I worked for 18 months until one day I decided to make something of myself for the sake of my child. I applied to nursing school. Then I worked all holidays except Thanksgiving and Christmas when I spent with my kids. The hospital policy could not make students work the holidays unless it was volunteered. Those were the only two days that I had off in the entire time I went to school.
If I was not busy at work, I studied. I went to class 5 days a week. I worked Friday nights and Sunday days. I wanted to give up many a time because I thought I was like a slave. It was my innocent daughter who helped me through the hard times.
Graduation finally came. I left the test room not knowing whether I passed or not. For the following days, I still worked as a student 7 days a week. I waited on pin and needles for 6 weeks to find out what I made and if I passed. I finally got my results. I made 645 out of 700. I was second highest in our class.
Then I went for an interview with the Dean of Nurses, San Antonio Hospital. I got hired as a licensed nurse there. Now I have a steady full time job. I am entitled to enjoy legal holidays and at least one day off a week.
