Preface Advanced Knowledge Technologies is recognised as a leading research programme conducted at some of the foremost informatics departments in Britain. It is also a training ground for a new generation of researchers. To highlight the work of these students, a doctoral 2005. This volume collects the papers from that event. symposium was organised for, and by, AKT students in June The broad scope of AKT is reflected in the contributions of its students. Here, they present work on novel approaches to problems in ontology mapping, natural language acquisition on the internet, agent systems, and the semantic web. This seemingly disparate list of topics is linked, not only by the letters ‘A’, ‘K’, and ‘T’, but by what they will lead to: a future where more intelligent machines will be able to help us deal more intelligently with the information flood. It is exciting to see AKT students taking an active part in that. Thankfully, no PhD students were harmed in the making of this collection or the symposiumI am only the co-chair, I can sincerely congratulate, without risk of straining my , but several must have wondered about the narrowness of their escape. As shoulder, those on the programme committee who did the work. They are: Duncan McRae-Spencer for ensuring reviewers did the reviewing, and weaving the schedule together; Ajay Chakravarthy for keeping the Java server pages in line; Tom Heath for ensuring things went smoothly at the Open University when we all came to visit; and Jessica Chen-Burger for being the friendly grown-up who held our hand along the way. Finally, many thanks to the reviewers, and the students themselves. Dave Lambert Co-chair 2005 Program CommitteeChair:
