Both Rose and her husband had lost their jobs, and now they were living in and out of motels with their son, Jack. Often they worried about their car because the bank would take it if they didn?t pay for it on time.

One day, Rose found a wallet containing a credit card, an airline ticket to New York and $2,394 in cash at a shopping center in Los Angeles.

“For a second I thought about taking the money,” she said later. “But only for a second.” Instead, she took the wallet and its contents to the nearest police station, where a man was asking for help. He wanted to get his wallet back.

In return for her honesty, Rose and her husband received more than ten job offers and an apartment rent-free for six months. An unknown donor(捐助者) brought the car payments up the date. Others gave cash. One elderly couple walked into the police station where Rose had turned in the wallet and asked how much money had been in it. When they were told the amount, the man said, “Then that?s what they deserve,” and wrote out a check for $2,400.

Rose said, “Never in a million years would I have thought this would happen to us. What we have received is far more than what was in the wallet.

Passage Two

For 20 years, people have been following the simple rules: Fat makes you fat. Fat gives you heart attacks. Eat it at your risk. So when we make another decision for the coming year to lose those 20 or 30 pounds, we can only wonder: Is there a better way to diet?

2

hhh

Yes, say a growing group of scientists and experts. The old advice obviously isn?t working. Fat isn?t the only crime. Filling up on rice and bread isn?t a solution. They argue that, among other things: sugar and white food, like bread, rice and potatoes, are diet destroyers. A diet that stresses meat and eggs but cuts out sugar and simple carbohydrates(碳水化合物) is more successful at helping people lose weight because they feel satisfied longer and won?t be eager to fill up on snack food(点心). Fat isn?t all bad. The simple message to lower(降低) fat ignores some important facts: Fat is necessary for the body to function correctly. There are good fats and bad fats. If not eaten too much, fat can actually help you diet because it makes food taste better and helps you feel full longer.

56. The traditional rules tell people_________. A. that losing weight is dangerous B. not to make a new decision C. that eating fat is dangerous D. not to eat too much bread

57. While people are following the old advice, they wish to know whether__________. A. fat makes themselves fat B. there is a better way to diet C. there is something dangerous in fat D. fat causes heart attacks

58. A growing group of experts suggest that people should have a bit more__________ for their health. A. fat B. sugar C. snack food D. carbohydrate 59. Meat and eggs are considered good for dieting because___________. A. they help to lower fat

B. they help people feel full longer C. they are important to people?s health

D. they are necessary for the body to function

60. The purpose of this essay is to inform people that____________. A. fat put people at risk B. fat makes you fat C. fat causes illness D. fat isn?t all bad

Passage Three

Back in 1912, chocolate maker Charlie Johnson had a problem. His chocolate didn?t ship well in hot weather, so candy stores ordered almost none between June and September. To stay in business, Charlie decided to develop a summer line: hard candy mints(薄荷糖).

Charlie?s factory wasn?t set up for making hard candy, so he hired a pill producer for the job. Most candies at the time were square and pillow-shaped—and expensive to produce. So Charlie ordered his flat and round, with a hole in the middle, to be different.

“They look like little life-savers,” Charlie said. Suddenly, the mints had a name.

Still, for Charlie the candies were only a sideline. When New York advertisement salesman John Tailor tried to persuade him to advertise the unique mints, Charlie wasn?t interested. “You would make a lot of money!” John said excitedly.

“Do you think so?” Charlie replied. “Then you buy the brand.” For $2,900, John bought the brand—and went to work.

“Why sell only in candy shops?” The salesman asked himself. He persuaded drugstores and restaurants to put the mints near the cash register(收款机) with a big five-cent card. “Be sure every customer gets a nickel(5美分镍币) with his change,” he told them.

His marketing idea worked. Customers threw their nickels to the clerks to get a little roll of the candy mints. From then on, Life Saver’s familiar little roll became one of the world?s best-selling candies.

61. Charlie?s problem during summer was that_________. A. he couldn?t produce chocolate B. he could only produce chocolate C. he couldn?t sell chocolate D. he could only sell chocolate 62. Passage Four

A computer is a machine. It handles a lot of information. Many people use computers to help them work better. Unfortunately, many computers are often hurt by virus. A computer virus is a set of bad instructions written just to hurt computers.

The virus is made by someone and sent to computers. It is set to turn on by itself. When it does, many computers around the world begin to have problems.

When the virus is turned on, it makes the computer do things it is not supposed to do. Many computers start to fill up with a lot of useless information. Several computer projects which have already cost millions of dollars are in great trouble.

When the computers are invaded(攻击) by a virus, some people have to turn off their computers; others have to stop their computers from being connected to other computers. The virus is spread by having computers share information with each other. Once in the computer, it takes over and tells the computer to do harmful things.

66. A computer_________.

A. may have problems caused by viruses

3

hhh

Passage Five

Every ten minutes, one kind of animal, plant or insect dies out forever. If nothing is done about it, one million kinds that are alive today will become extinct twenty years from now.

The seas are in danger. They are being filled with poison: industrial and nuclear waste, chemical fertilizers (肥料). The Mediterranean (地中海) is nearly dying; the North Sea is following. If nothing is done about it, one day soon nothing will be able to live in the seas.

The tropical rain forests are being destroyed. If nothing is done about it, they will have nearly disappeared in twenty years. The effect on the world?s climate-and on our agriculture and food supplies-will be disastrous.

Fortunately, somebody is trying to do something about it. In 1961, the World Wildlife Fund was founded-a small group of people who wanted to raise money to save animals and plants from extinction. Today, the World Wildlife Fund is a large international organization. It has raised 35 million pounds and has created or given supports to National Parks in five continents. It has helped 30 animals and birds-including the tiger-to survive(存活). Perhaps this is not much, but it is a start. If more people give more money-and if more governments wake up to what is happening-perhaps the World Wildlife Fund will be able to help us avoid the disaster that threatens the natural world, and all of us.

71. In 20 years, a million kinds of living things will_________. A. be in danger B. be polluted C. come alive D. die out
