Passage Two
There are many kinds of ants in the world that always live in companies. They are the most hardworking creatures and most of them make their nests under ground. The small black ants that we see running back and forth in the grass are the same ants that bother us by coming to our picnics uninvited. They are not trying to be harmful, but are only doing the house-keeping job they were made for. They are nature\'s clean-up crew. One of these ants, scouting in the grass, finds the trail of an injured beetle. In some mysterious way the news spreads. Soon there are two ants, then a few more. Then a dozen or more are running around the beetle. Enough ants will come to put an end to it.

Passage Three
Archimedes was a famous Greek mathematician and scientist. He was born around 287 B. C, and he died in the year 212 BC.
Archimedes is most well known for one specific idea that he came up with. solid object which is immersed in a liquid is pushed up by a force which is equal to the weight of the water that the object displaces (or moves) . For example, if you put a piece of wood and a piece of gold the same size in water, only the wood will float. Both the wood and gold displace the same amount of water, but the wood weighs less than this water, while the gold weighs more.
It is believed that Archimedes discovered this principle when the king of Syracuse asked him to solve a problem. The king wanted to know if his crown was pure gold or a mixture of gold and silver. The king, of course, did not want
to melt his crown to find out. The idea came to Archimedes as he lowered himself into his bath. He noticed how the water spilled out of the tub. He decided to use the same idea for the crown. He knew that a gold crown immersed in water would weigh more than one made of silver. The experiment was done and the goldsmith was proved guilty of trying to trick the King.
71. A good title for this selection is _____ .

Passage Four
Today the official language of the United States and most of Canada is English. However, French almost became the official language because of a war.
The French and Indian War was fought between 1754 and 1763. The name of this war is not accurate because the war was actually between England and France. The Indians fought on the side of the French.
France and England were trying to gain control of North America. France held Canada, and England held part of what is now the United States. However, France tried to expand its land by moving southward into New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia. When the French built a fort on the Ohio River, the residents in Virginia sent Ceorge Washington to attack the fort in 1754. However, the French defeated Washington.
